When my contacts began to bother me, I knew I needed new ones.  They were the same prescription in each eye, so I just needed to re-order 2 boxes of the same ones.  My insurance company gives me a $90 credit, so with what Pearle was going to charge me $99.95 for two boxes was fine.  Then, they called back and told me that my prescripition had expired in 2/2011 so I needed a new exam.  I understand, annual eye exams are important for good eye health.  However, I have a good insurance plan which charges a $10 co-pay for office visit, and $40 for contact fittings.  So, that should be $50, plus $9.95 of what my contact deductible would be left over right?  Well, not at our friends at Pearle Vision.  No, I submitted my insurance, then received a bill for $550 in services not covered by my plan.  In that billing was $25 for the discount I received for using my insurance card which they are a participating provider!  So, you get a discount for having insurance, then I get charged that discount.  When I talked to the Manager, I told him I did not want the eye exam, just the contacts.  He tells me that I have a $150 outstanding balance, so if I pay that, I can skip the eye exam.  So, I tell him WAIT a minute...I gave you my insurance, which paid them $194, then you billed me $550 out of pocket, and I STILL have a $150 outstanding balance that you have never sent me a bill for?  No.  I'm done, I will never go to that office again, and I called my insurance company to report them.  I called another local small provider in Joliet, they checked my insurance card and told me I will have to pay the $10 co-pay, $40 contact fitting, then about $2 for the contacts after my $90 insurance and that is ALL!  I will never go back to Pearle Vision again after this experience.  The doctor was nice, but their billing practices should be against the law.
