My son is 17 and just got contacts in place of his glasses. When we went to order new contacts they denied us because they said his prescription was no good. When I contacted Pearle the Manager "Vinnie" Said that there was nothing he could do and I would have to wait to contact the Doctor who is only there on Sundays. He said he would have to have another exam. My insurance is Blue cross and eye exams are covered every other year.
When I told him that I contacted my insurance company he said there is NO WAY anyone would give a prescription without an exam and in the same breath said I should wait until Sunday because the Doctor may sign off on it. I also asked about his presciption and I was told that glasses are good for two years and contacts are only good for one. When I asked why ALL Insurance companies pay for an exam every other year he again said I should contact the Doctor who only appears one day of the week and he said he could not speak for him, he may sign off on them after he told me in an abrasive manner that NOONE and He means NOONE would do that.
My son is leaving for college and he needs his contacts and Pearle is absolutely no help to me. I pay $49.00 a week for insurance and they are telling me that I also have to pay for an exam out of pocket if my son wants contacts. I will never again step foot in a place that treats customers as if they were nothing but a dollar sign. If I were anyone, I would never go to Pearle on route one in Saugus MA.

Well...

I am sorry to hear about your experience. If they did become rude to you, you should have been treated better. However, there are a couple of things I want to point out. First, most Rxs are good for two years for eyeglasses and only one year on contacts, given the potential health risks for contacts lenses can cause. If the Rx was indeed expired, then the associate would put themselves and the doctor at risk if they were to fill that expired Rx and if anything were to happen to your son.
Second, not all insurance benefit cycles are the same. Some renew benefits every two years, some of them renew every year. It can vary depending on the group and the insurance company. (Davis Vision, Eyemed, NVA, VSP, VBA, etc) If this plan isnt through work, I would possibly look into another plan if you are not happy with your current coverage.
Last, do talk to the Doctor. Some of them are willing to help their patients out in these types of situations and may be willing to cut you a deal for your son's contact lens Rx.
