State Farm State Farm Renters Insurance - Dont buy over the phone! State farm Renters insurance phone agent tried to scam me Phone Sales Agent Nationwide

I wanted to buy a Renters' insurance because my apartment mgmt needs it.

I got a quote online and wanted to check on a couple of terms and conditions. I put my number in on the website and they called me.

The sales rep on the phone clarified the policies and she wanted to continue the sales over the phone. I wanted to do it online but continued on the phone anyways because some human being would get credit for selling a policy.

Then she said my state has a minimum property insurance requirement of $20,000.

I told her that every insurance provider online gave me a quote for my address for a proprety value far less than that amount. She insisted that Texas has a $20,000 minimum on the property value for Renters' insurance and even if I did it online, it would say the same thing just before I pay for the policy.

I realized she was scamming me. It doesn't make any sense as Renters' insurance itself is the property owner's discretion and not the State's.

I disconnected the call, continued online and was able to successfully pay for the policy.

If she was upselling on $20k, normally it is fine. But if she is lying that it was a State requirement is downright illegal. It is clearly not a misunderstanding since there is no such thing as a "State Minimum" and $20,000 is an arbitrary amount (at which, I later saw the premium suddenly spiked).

State Farm itself seems to be fine since they gave me the best quote (Online) of any providers but their phone reps seem to be downright pushy and crappy and will say anything to get more commission. 

DON'T BUY STATE FARM INSURANCE OVER THE PHONE. If you have no other option, get only the quote and call other providers and verify.
