Trucking is not for everyone but putting it down helps no-one

AUTHOR: Mark - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 03, 2009

Comments regarding this industry such as those you have given only demostatrate your lack of knowledge and experiance about the industry, the people in it, or the skills needed to make it work. It was probably a good thing you left because you would have had a miserable time. But do not run down the rest of us or trucking as a whole. There is good and bad in any endever and we are no exception but, being on the outside hardly gives one the ability to make enlightened comments about it.

Twenty years on the road has given me, like other "veteren" drivers a solid in-sight on trucking and all it's good and bad points. And make no mistake, there are good and bad points, just as with any other segment of working life. What makes trucking unique in my mind is the demand put on it's people for service, which is all any trucking company has to offer thier clients. This can and does make life problematic for all of us but especially for the people who are on sharp edge of the lance-the drivers. To meet our customers' needs, we are required to make sacrifices of our selves-in time, regulations etc. And this is not an easy thing to do. But this is what we accept and how we pay our bills. It is hard on our familys and ourselves but we do it anyway because this is what we do-because service matters.

No trucking company out there is in the business of providing a comfortable living for thier employees-they are in the business of providing a service-the service of hauling freight on time and in-tact. This is an expensive prospect for the companies in terms of overhead-fuel, maintaince and employee-driver compensation. Typically, companies operate with a large overhead and marginal profit margins. There are good reasons for companies like Swift to do what they do and usually, they are in line with the fore-mentioned reasons but mostly, to make a profit. What company exsits not to make a profit? Companies like Swift and the one I drive for, think or belive rather, that they can provide the better services and make a profit at the same time. By doing this, they provide jobs for the rest of us. And one must understand this, even when things appear to be going against one. The situation can be more exasperated by the realities of regulations, economic cycles and freight cycles. Yet this is just part of the game. And one understands this to survive. One cannot have a self-centered view and continue to drive-it isn't compatable with the reality. When the system fails-as it will do, everybody loses. And it doesn't matter why. Bottem line, when trucks arn't moving no one else is eithor. And it doesn't matter why.

There is no perfect company or situation true. But neithor is there one in any other endever of life. Life is simpley unfair and imperfect. And to single out trucking, is just wrong. Eithor one can do it, or one cannot. And it is not something to be ashamed of if one cannot function in this industry. It is shamefull however, to knock it down from the outside without really experincing all it has to offer-good and bad.
