Recently we returned from a home exchange in Brazil. When we received our T Mobile bill we discovered that there were 52 international calls charged to us that we never made.

At no time was this phone out of my possession. My phone
has registered the calls which were actually placed.
There were 10 and most of the time the phone was
turned off.

We contacted customer service but they repeatedly said this couldn't have happened. Our friends have Verizon wireless and the same thing happened to them. Verizon recognized this as a scam and put a hold on the phone and did not charge them for the illegal calls. So we know it does happen.

We contacted customer service at T Mobile and the office of Robert Dotson president of T Mobile. The only thing they would do is give us a credit of $200.

We are honest people who live on a fixed income. We pay our bills. But this bill shows we are getting ripped off by a company that can't control its service and by some scam artist.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

International Billing

AUTHOR: Roger - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 04, 2008

Your comments/complaint about your multiple international calls went unanswered mainly because T-Mobile does have a disclosure on their international roaming. The disclosure pretty much states 2 things...

1. You MUST activate World Class Roaming before leaving home in order for your phone to not only work, but also make ANY calls other then "Emergency 112" calls in ANY foreign country with the exception of Canada. Even Mexico requires this (although T-Mobile says it doesnt) as I learned later down the line by multiple customer complaints.

2. CALLS that go unanswered and roll to voicemail are billed airtime as 2 calls. ONE call to the phone - which is charged International roaming rate (this includes the long distance), and ONE call BACK to the USA (this also is charged at the international rate). IE - Your in the United Kingdom, and the call roaming rate is $0.99, an incoming call, answered or not will be $0.99 per minute. If the call goes unanswered, and rolls back to voicemail, the call TO the UK is considered COMPLETE CONNECT, and now forwards that call BACK to the United States, for a SECOND charge. There is NOTHING deceptive or illegal about this.

The reason is NOT T-Mobile but the GSM system worldwide was built on network forwarding. This is typical and standard on all GSM networks worldwide. However, some companies, say AT&T may chose NOT to pass this second charge or even the first charge to the customer, and may eat the cost of the calls, but charge you less minutes at a higher rate.

Its helpful to note that T-Mobile CAN disable your voicemail so your only charged for ONE call, and again, only if you answer it. This must be set up prior to leaving the USA. You may also go into your phone settings and select CALL FORWARDING UNCONDITIONAL and input a number that goes to a busy signal all the time, or to voicemail this way your never charged for ANY call as the system sees and tells the network to send all calls prior to ringing to whatever number you selected. T-Mobile does NOT charge for Call Forwarding Unconditional as it comes out of your "bucket minute plan", however, all other call forwarding options (with the default exception to 805-MESSAGE) are charged separately from a dedicated bucket of 500 minutes specifically for that purpose.

I hope this helps you out a little more, and gives you an understanding that its not really T-Mobile who made this happen, its the network of GSM and the billing standard that was created with the inception of GSM.
