On May 10th I brought my box in to ship at a UPS Store. I did the Paypal shipping myself a taped the label on it. It was all ready to go.
The guy there asks if I want a copy of the tracking #. I say sure but then realize its just his excuse to buy time for a sales pitch. He tells me I can ship at UPS stores for less that Paypal fees and they will help me if problems happen. Whatever but maybe i can do it myself just fine. The guy starts shaking the box and rambling on how the box might not be good enough for shipping. I tell him its just a vintage fan and I really doubt it can be damaged and I only got $38 for it on Ebay.
Big mistake. Leave it to UPS to manhandle my shipping! The grill on the fan was all bent and now the buyer wants a refund! I went back to the UPS Store and now theres a differnet guy there. he says he won't help me because they didn't make the label. What kind of stupid copout is that?? How convenient...if you don't pay them to ship they'll smash your package and then tell you to take a hike. Like I'm supposed to have them box and ship my stuff with service like that right?
Next time I'm using my post office. Sure they might seem like they want you in and out, but that's better than the cheesy bulls**t freindliness at UPS. They're like used car salemen out to get every penny in your pocket. At least is know the post office doesn't have guerillas handling my boxes!

Insurance has its place

Insurance at least covers you if the package disappears. Crawford and its ilk can't blame a disappearing act on the shipper. As for damage, the "DENY DENY DENY and hope they go away" policies notwithstanding, I don't see an alternative when shipping something of value. Just have to be one of 1% who fight them if damage occurs. Leave as few loopholes for them to use as possible by having the shipper do or supply the packaging.

Forget the "insurance" as it almost NEVER pays anyway!

That insurance is a scam, regardless of what carrier you use as it is a third party insurer with third party adjusters.
I have been down that road too many times with UPS.I used to ship 15-20 packages a day with UPS from the place of business I managed. I paid for insurance on at least 75% of them.
Out of the hundreds and hundreds of packages I shipped during those 17 months, I had 3 claims for damage. And, I'm talking blatant mishandling and obvious intentional abuse. For example 1 package came back leaking with the whole top crushed in. It had a huge footprint right on top where it was obvious to anyone who looked at it that someone used it as a step stool. Another one had an entire corner crushed in and had paint on the crushed corner embedded in the crushed cardboard. That one was thrown and obviously hit a wall or something.
Anyway, in each case I filed claims. In each case my claim was denied. Come to find out that the people at Crawford Insurance deny every claim the first time in hopes you will give up. Well, not me.
They jump you through hoop after hoop. Get ready.
They always say "insufficient packaging" or something on those lines to blame the customer.
I had a UPS rep in on more than 1 occasion to verify that I was shipping in only approved containers and by approved methods, etc. No problem there.
The company I worked for told me to drop it.
If it was my package and my money, I would have them in court just for principle alone.
The bottom line here is to never buy the insurance.
It will never pay.

I'm gave an apology to the UPS store.

Until I got feedback on here, I had no idea that the UPs store was privately owned under UPS. I checked the price too the man said and it was a little less than my Paypal. I was just having a bad day and didn't want to redo my work. If I had done what the UPS man said I wouldn't have had problems...so I wouldn't have reason to get mad at anyone. He still helped me where I had to call about the claim but its a real hassle dealing with Paypal.
I plan on doing a lot of Ebay so I'll be buying good boxes and packing stuff from the UPS store or someplace else to save money, but I will definately have UPS make my label for me. I blew it and took my anger out on the UPS store.
When I was talking about UPS at work, the lady next to me said she has used that place before and thought they did a good job for her. She also sounded like the couple responses here and it made me kind of embarassed with what I said. it also made me embarassed that a response by rik was the only one that bashed UPS store. rik is not my family or friend and I don't know what his problem is.
Thanks for the info here. I will try not jumping conclusions before I get things figured out if it happens again. Mostly I just want to say sorry to the UPS store even though he didn't know I complained here.

Sigh

What Jackie said plus, you said you didn't want the tracking number. That tells me you also didn't pay the dollar or two for insurance.
Question, what makes you so sure UPS is at fault for the damage? Your buyer could have easily not liked the item, broke it themselves and is claiming it was delivered broken.
If you are going to sell online you need to learn how to protect yourself.

UPS does not make clear their relationship to these stores

Neither UPS, nor these UPS stores, make clear their relationship to one another, or lack thereof. That said, maybe you really didn't put enough protection in the box with that fan. How exactly, did you pack it? How much padding between its extremities and the box? How sturdy a box? did you ever contact UPS direct about the damage, or have your buyer do so from their end? Did they refuse delivery due to evident damage on the box, or did the box look okay and they found the fan damaged upon opening? Did UPS just leave the package or get a signature? Did you pay for insurance? All these factors determine your case, or lack thereof, with UPS. If you're a regular shipper, one would think you'd know the drill.

You are incredible

WOW, where to begin with this? You paid UPS directly for the shipping of your ebay sale, and you dropped it off at the UPS store. The clerk at the store offered you a receipt showing you left it there. The clerk told you the UPS store could ship for less and take care of any problems that might arise. You say "Whatever, but maybe I can do it myself just fine". He informed you that the box you chose to pack in was not good enough for shipping. You didn't care and shipped the package anyway. Now, you're mad at the UPS store??? He told you the package wasn't good enough, but you ignored him. He told you if you paid the UPS store to ship the item, he would handle any problems that come up (like damages). The UPS store didn't damage your package, UPS did. The UPS store is a franchise - they don't work for UPS -- UPS works for them.
This UPS store tried to help you ship your package safely, but "Whatever, but maybe I can do it myself just fine". So you did it just fine. This UPS store owes you exactly what you paid the UPS store - nothing. You paid UPS directly so you deal with UPS on the damage claim.
Oh, yeah and grow up.
