WalMart has been in my city for some time. In the middle of last year, I noticed a change in the attitudes of the staff that work at this store. Staff are now incredibly rude and will ignore people for large amounts of time, even if they are obviously waiting for help. Many times when I go into this store, the cashiers don't even pay attention to you as they are serving you. Many times they will continue to talk to their friends. As a result, I feel frustrated and very angry. Several times, I have gone into the store to purchase items. What is listed on the rack has been inaccurate several times. The associates refused to give the item to me for the listed price. And, when I told them the price on the rack, they always call back to see if I am lying. This is fine, but, six out of the seven times this has happened, the people checking the price claim that they do not see the price that I had stated. When I go back to look at the rack and find the price, I have no problem seeing it. These people are incredibly deceptive.
In addition, in the overnight hours, the aisles are often completly packed with boxes waiting to be unloaded. Once the people are done with a box, they throw it wherever they want. They don't even bother to move the boxes so people can get down aisles. I've even been sworn at by several associates.
I've sent numerous complaints to walmart via the web site and snail mail. I have yet to get back a single response. Do not do business with this store if you can help it. They have no sense of courtesy and even the manager will ignore you.

Overnight stocking

I understand that it can be annoying trying to shop around lots of boxes, however walmart stockers are given a certain amount of freight each night, and are expected to get it done by the end of their shift. At the start of the night they tell you the number of hours that it will take for your dept to be stocked. Its supposed to tell them how many employees should be in that dept, but usually they will only give one stocker per dept. A few days ago, I was told that I had 27 hrs worth of freight for my 8 hr shift (by myself), and all night, all I heard was "Are you done yet?" from management. So yeah, it will be a mess, and theres really nothing we can do about it. If you want the items to be on the shelf for you to buy, it has to be that way.

Rude employees

It seems pretty normal for Wal-Mart and Sam's club employee's to be rude and often aggressive with customers. ( I have first hand experience of 'customer service' worker threatening me when I was making a return to Fern Park (Orlando area) store. The manager on duty had to 'fix things' and apologize.
I believe they don't get paid very well (from overhearing conversations among staff) and the company actively prevents people working 'excessive' hours (below the threshold where they will be eligible for medical insurance)
They are also, in the majority, unhelpful.
It is the main reason my wife and I have switched to Costco for the majority of our shopping needs.
The staff actually look happy to be there and have always been friendly and helpful.

Maybe it's you that is rude

I've shopped at Walmart since the seventies, in many different states. I've NEVER seen or heard of one incident where an employee was rude or unhelpful. But then, I treat the employess as people, not slaves. Where do you think the employees come from, outer space? They are the local poulation, your friends and neighbors, or their teenage kids. For many it's their first job and first time dealing with a very rude public. They are learning how to deal with people, and that includes frumpy old people that piss and moan at them just because they can get someone fired for talking back to them. If they have one "problem" I'd agree that clerks are sometimes hard to find when you want one, but that is management's doing.

Rude staff?

By all means, avoid shopping at WalMart. Just go to your nearest Bloomie's or Nordstrom's. There you will get personalized service--and pay for it with higher prices for the exact same item. It's a DISCOUNT store for crying out loud! They've got to restock shelves at some time. If it's so upsetting to you to be in the store during overnight hours, tell your employer your hours must be changed. This would solve your 'problem.' But then you'd be complaining about all the customers in the store and you can't get checked out fast enough.
You're waiting for help? Open your mouth. The busy employees are not mind readers.
If you approach shopping in WalMart with an attitude, you'll receive an attitude in kind.

Open 24 Hours

Yes, do go to the 24 hour Targets and Walgreens'.
They use fairies who wave their magic wands to stock the shelves.
It makes for easier and safer navigation through the aisles and is entertaining as well.
Both stores started this last May.
I'm surprised you haven't heard.

I read "Nickeled and Dimed" and have spoken with former employees

I used to complain about employees being rude and unhelpful also. But if what I've heard about how they are treated is true, in a way I can understand. Employees working off the clock? I would be cranky also. And it sounds like they have way too many duties to do while being expected to help customers.
I have shopped late at night like you, to avoid the crowds. The drawback is that that is when stocking and cleaning are occurring. I have had to weight for a forklift to bypass me on more than one occasion; it's like being out in traffic. I have not seen employees throwing boxes in the aisle, but the aisles are sometimes blocked.
Nowadays I stay out of Walmart as much as possible. Especially around the holidays, when it is utter chaos.

I would like nothing more...

I really wish I could stay out of wal-mart. The main problem is that there really is a lack of other stores in the area that are open when I have time to do my shopping. There are supermarkets that I can get my food at. But, there are just some things that I can only get at walmart at midnight or three am, when I am out of work. If we had a 24 target, I'd go there. But, luckily, there is a 24 walgreens that is being built. I'll probably go there as much as possible as soon as it opens.

I can tell you from experiance that one of the biggest reasons you recieve bad service is because most of the people that come into the store treat everyone that works there like there garbage.Sometimes its hard not to take it out on others when you have had one crappy customer after another. This not an excuse its a reason.
As far as cashiers calling to check on prices they have to.
Freight on the floor at night is hard on customers and associates but when you recieve 4000plus peices a night you gotta stock it and there are less people in shopping at night. I would have a talk with the store manager if you feel the service is that bad in your store.

Stay out of Walmart
AUTHOR: Alan - (U.S.A.)

My advice is to stay out of there. Based on the other reports I have read on this site, it is not out of line to say they might accuse you of shoplifting, and call the cops. The attitude seems to be "welcome to Walmart you are under arrest". shop at Target instead.
