I decided to make an atm deposit late one evening after work. It was already nearing midnight so the bank was closed. I pulled up to the drive up atm at that branch. My sister was in the car with me and saw me count out three $100 dollar bills and fifteen $20's(a total of $600 dollars). I even made a comment on how I was surprised that I had made that much in tips that week.
I made the deposit and drove off. A couple of days later I noticed that my balance was in the negatives after making a car payment. I went to my online account to check it out. I saw that there was a "$300 misc. adjustment" that was made. Half of what I deposited!!!. I immediately called the bank and asked what happened. The customer service rep told me that she'd put in a claim.
A couple weeks later I get a letter in the mail saying that the investigation was over, and they found no error. WHAT THE F$%@!!!! They told me that the employees counted two 100 dollar bills and five 20's. Now, I understand if there were a couple of missing 20's, but HALF of my deposit?? That's just not right!
So, now I'm negative $300 dollars, getting charged overdraft fees, and broke!! I have a 8 month old son and money has been tight. I definitely cannot afford to have this happen to me.
My suggestion, Wells Fargo needs signs next to their ATM machines stating "Deposit at your own risk!!"

Karl:
and how the CIA is now involved because of a $100 bill that was really a 'washed' $5 bill that was posing as a $100 bill, correct?
Why would the cia be involved?

ATM chain of evidence

Well, there is ample opportunity for fraud and theft to occur via ATM deposits. Generally, there are supposed to be two people who collect the ATM deposits and deliver them to the local branch or center for processing. THEN there are supposed to be at least two more bank personnel who are tasked with actually processing and verifying ATM deposits. So, you could have been ripped off by either one of these teams of employees. It must have been a one time thing, someone was really short of cash, because as someone else mentioned if a pattern of missing cash deposit develops on an employee route, said employees would not only be fired but prosecuted for larceny. Unfortunately there is nothing you can really do. It is your word against the banks in re cash deposits. Well, I suppose you could sue, but again it would be yours and your sister's word against the bank personnel, who will swear that the envelope only had $300 in it. I personally only deposit small sums of cash into an ATM, never more than $40 bucks, just in case there are some unscrupulous people on the other side processing items. We live and learn.

Sounds to me like you left some money out when you made your deposit! I say this because in your post you say "Now, I understand if there were a couple of missing 20's, but HALF of my deposit??", why would you say that if you deposited all the money. It sounds like Wells Fargo is not the one doing a scam here.

It appears that you were ripped off by Wells Fargo mistake or blatant corruption.
From personal experience, I can say that Wells Fargo is corrupt. I can attest that they have charged my previous account with bogus and unauthorized fees and only removed them after they were caught red-handed.
It is quite possible that you are the victim of a employee theft or it may have been a error,- at any rate, based on your claim, they stole your money.
I would have to agree with others...NEVER give banks an opportunity to steal your cash from a ATM cash deposit. Use the tellers or deposit checks only- at least they are traceable.

Not that I doubt your story, but this is the problem of depositing basically untraceable items in an ATM. You have no proof of what you deposited. Yes you know you deposited x amount of money, but when they counted the money it disappeared.
There are really only three possibilities. You either didn't deposit what you said, the employee miscounted your money, or the bank employee stole money from your envelope. If there is a discrepancy between what is said to be deposited and what was deposited the employee is going to try and reconcile the difference, in other words they are going to recount the money. So logically they should have found it if it was there. What about an employee stealing money. Yes this is possible but is an employee going to chance their job, and prison time for $300? After all if they continue to do this a pattern would arise and they would get caught. This leaves your deposit. Unfortunately it goes back to no proof that you really did deposit what you said.
What I find a bit perplexing is your statement "Now, I understand if there were a couple of missing 20's". Why would it be okay for a bank to misplace even 1 $20 bill?
While I would suggest you keep on them to see if they can find the money. From now on you should always deposit cash in the presence of a Teller.

JIM, WHY ARE BANKS 'PROMOTING' THE PRACTICE OF DEPOSITING CASH INTO ATM MACHINES???
AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

I'm sure that most people have seen the TV commercial where two men are standing outside an ATM & one of them takes a $20 bill from the other and then DEPOSITS it into the ATM machine, right? I believe it was a Chase commercial, if I'm not mistaken. So let me get this straight; there's a National Ad campaign on Network TV showing all of us how simple it is to DEPOSIT CASH into an ATM machine, but we're supposed to never deposit cash into an ATM machine, according to you???

Notice how in your case and mine, the bank was in error..due to malfunctions or in your case maybe even theft/fraud?
And..that the bank had full control over the decision and how to handle it..and how long it would take...judge, jury and executioner.. when they were the ones on trial? But when it comes to the bank..everyone is guilty until proven innocent..and the bank is the judge....that seems fair.. does it not??
Now God forbid me or you make a mistake..the banks will bold face tell us to w**k off and it's all our fault...they are evil and I will never be convinced otherwise. Total example of how absolute power corrupts...absolutely. Well look at what they have been getting away with..anyone who can read or watch TV knows.

I don't trust ATMs At ALL !!!

When I was with Wachovia I went to a Wells Fargo/Wachovia ATM (to save the non Wachivoa ATM fee) and tried to take out $300.00. The screen stated "transaction can not be completed at this time..try again later"..no receipt or money came out and the machine made no gestures as if it were dispensing. So I figured the machine was out of cash.
Long story short..I went many days without access to my money..and the bank would arbitrarily and at will put the money back and then take it back out. So I was in fear of overdrafting and NSF's..which did happen.
Now eventually the bank must have figured out what was wrong and returned all associated fees and lifted the "provision" of the $300.00 so I didn't have to live in fear that they would take it again and re-apply all the fees.
Also bear in mind that Wachovia was blaming Wells Fargo..(aren't they merged now?) so I went into the Wells Fargo where the ATM was..and they blamed Wachovia..and wanted no part of it. The person in the bank denied any connection with Wachovia..so I explained that right on the screen the logo for the banks is clearly "Wells Fargo/ Wachovia"..and still I was told they are not Wachovia..seems they want no part of the bank they purchased, or deal with their issues..hmmmm. Guess it was not a smart move to purchase that failure after all..but they used our taxpayer dollars for it..makes you sick does it not?
So yes in this case it worked out in my favor in the end..but it took close to 30 days for the bank to "sort out" and investigate. Now what if the bank would have told me after investigating that they conclude I did receive the money?..and I have no receipt or records? Would have really sucked. And a small claims court case would have decided. Who knows how long that would have taken? I need every penny of my money these days.
So yes..always make deposits in person..and now I even make ATM withdrawals only in person..I want a human to put the money in my hand..and give me a correct receipt of the transaction.only way to fly these days, trust me.

Deposit Cash Into An ATM - Are You Kidding?

I read these from time to time and it never amazes me as to the lack of common sense there is. This one is your fault. You don't take cash to an ATM and deposit it; I don't care how many witnesses you have and how many times you double-count the deposit. That's the surest way to lose your money.
If you're going to deposit cash - take the cash to the bank during normal hours where there is a teller there that will count your cash and input the correct amount to your account. The money will be available for you to use immediately because the deposit is in cash, it will be for the correct amount, and no errors.
