I opened a account with this bank two months ago and never had a problem until this past weekend. i have used their debit card and have never overdrawn my account but this past week after Christmas, I did knowingly go to the branch and withdrew one hundred dollars and knew i would be charged the 34.00 fee.

five days before that date i made three charges on my card....31.99,15.91,and 44.32 and my available balance stood at 6.11. I kn ew i would be responsible for the 34.00 fee and was fine with that until the next day I checked my account on the internet and saw that i was charged with 3 overdraft fees.

i went directly to the bank and they said that when i withdraw money that creates a overdraft, any funds that were previously authorized and in "hold" would be paid last, therefore although my account showed i had 6.11 available, when i withdrew the one hundred dollars, they "unauthorized" my three charges and therefore my account had 112.68 in it so they withdrew the hundred dollars and charged me the three overdraft charges. I was then informed that i was lucky to have them cover the three charges and they saved me money because the stores i charged at could havee charged me overdraft fees in addition to the ones I recieved from Woodforest. I then told the "customer service agent" that i was going to close my account and she just shruged her shoulders and said there are plenty of people they can get money from and they don't need me.

I have accounts opened at two other banks and told them about the problem and they have never heard of this and said that i was right to close the account. One manager of a bank did tell me that Woodforest Bank is known in the banking industry as the "rent to own" of banking due to the fact that they go out of there way to get people with bad or not so good credit as customers and then sock it to them in fees and charges.

I tired calling their main office in Texas with no luck and wondering what banking commision to follow up with.

Unfortunately they are within their rights to exercise the terms of your agreement. If you are going to "float" funds you need to wait until nothing else is pending because you don't know what order everything will be paid. Your experience will be the same with any bank, and those guys telling you they had "never heard of" such practices are blowing smoke because they want you to bank with them.
