I just want to let you know that ADT is a rip off!!! when the representative sat down with me, she didn't mention anything about 3 years contract!! What a rep off!! And there is no way you can get out of that contract, I sold my house, and I explained to them that I no longer have the house, and the community that I live right now have their own security system. I tried to explained that to them with no luck!
So please, Do not sign up with them!! There are cheaper companies out there better than ADT and you don't have to make a contract, specially 3 years!! Thats insane!

Unless...

Coast...unless the signor was never given a written and authentic copy of the contract and was VERBALLY informed that it was NOT a contract they were signing and agreeing too...They will have a bumpy ride trying to convince the courts. A signed agreement is binding so long as it meets the legal terms for contracting law. . They were paying monthly and receiving the service ...That in itself sets off the Contract concept....The only thing I can think of to aide this complaint is if ADT did in some way thru the agreement Faulter...ie: poor equipment, non responsive, or faultering on the terms. That is the only way I can think of to help this writer. Personally I think its unfortunate that a 90 day clause for early cancellation cannot be a part of any type of service contract. It helps the consumer when circumstances such as this do arise. Particularly in todays housing market. Legally though, the person signed the terms and did not fully comprehend the ramifications should they "leave" the contract earlier then agreed. Its a two way street.

Yes, the report did indicate there was a contract but the OP wrote, "she didn't mention anything about 3 years contract" so I thought maybe the OP didn't know that was a contract s/he signed.

Coast...from the poster it would appear they did sign a three year contract and "forgot" to read the terms. Per the ADT website and the standard contract for cancellation , the client will need to buy there way out early with penalty fees.

Did you sell your other house already?

Did you sell the house you were living in before or is it still on the market? If it is still on the market you can see if your realtor can add the alarm into the sale of the home. I am pretty sure the alarm is transferable if the new owners or potential owners want to assume paying the cost of the installed alarm system and monitoring.
Check out your options. I had ADT for awhile and I definitely remember the initial contract being 3 years and then year to year after that.

Sorry to hear or in this case, read that you are having problems with canceling your contract. When you signed it did you read the terms and agreement section? Did you chose to have the contract reviewed by an attorney so you were fully aware of your rights? Silly little things like this is what curtails such online reports such as the one posted here. Its one thing to listen to a sales pitch, its another to fully read and understand contracts. Contact a lawyer and see what can be done after the fact. ADT is a highly reputable company and they have a right to guard their reputation. Did they not supply you with 24 hour service? Did they have faulty equipment? Are you in a state that guards your contractual rights and surpresses them from further collection once you give a 90 day written notice? There are some states that allow a client to send notice of cancellation. How did that fair for you when you did such?
