ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS, ONE IN JANUARY OF 2005, AND IN AUGUST OF 2006, I TRIED TO BUY TWO DIFFERENT DELL COMPUTERS, AND NEITHER TIME WAS I SUCCESSFUL. THE FIRST WAS AT A DELL KIOSK. THE SALES PERSON REFUSED TO SELL ME THE ADVERTISED SPECIAL, DISSED THE MACHINE AND TOLD ME THAT I WAS BETTER OFF WITH NO MACHINE AT ALL. THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE TO TALK TO, AND SO I LEFT AND BOUGHT A COMPUTER AT BEST BUY, BUT I TRIED TO COMPLAIN, BUT THE DELL CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL ONLY TALK TO YOU AFTER YOU HAVE A CONTRACT, AND YOU CANNOT GET THEM TO TRANSFER YOU TO A SUPERVISOR. I FINALLY GOT SOME ATTENTION THROUGH COMPANY INVESTMENTS, AND WAS TOLD THAT WAS AN ABERATION AND WOULD NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. AT THAT POINT IT WAS AN ABSTRACTION.

THEN RECENTLY I TRIED TO BUY A NOTEBOOK ONLINE, BUT THE ADVERTISED OFFER, WITH SHIPPING AND HANDLING INCLUDED WOULDN'T COME UP ONLINE. WHEN I CALLED FOR TECHNICAL SUPPORT, THEY TOLD ME NO SUCH A SPECIAL WAS BEING ADVERTISED, AT THE SAME TIME I HAD TWO IN FRONT OF MY FACE, WITH THE CODE NUMBERS. AGAIN, IN ALL OF DELL COUNTRY, THERE WERE NO SUPERVISORS AVAILABLE.

I WENT BACK TO BEST BUY.

BAIT AND SWITCH IS AGAINST THE LAW, BUT APPARENTLY THEY DON'T KNOW THAT IN TEXAS. THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE IN WISCONSIN, THE AGENCY THAT LOOKS INTO THESE THINGS IS QUESTIONING DELL. GOOD LUCK. I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED FIRST IN RIP-OFF REPORTS.

Dept. of Agriculture

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 22, 2006

is responsible for alot of things is Wisconsin like Howard said. They monitor businesses, auto repair, fraud, etc. It really isn't just "Agriculture" So I wouldn't doubt that they also deal with things such as this.

Although I have to say that I haven't had a problem with Dell. I have 2 computers from them. The last one I purchased I waited two days for it to go on sale, because it does seem to change daily. They almost always have the cheapest computer on sale, but if you want something better just wait a few days and it will be on sale also. Then you can choose any additional upgrades or services that you want. But I did get exactly what they advertised for the price, and free shipping. I also got it in just a few days, which was much faster than the week that I was quoted. I am very happy. The only thing I don't like is that they load your computer with all kinds of crap that you may not want.. aol, mcaffee, etc. But I guess that is why you can get the computers so cheap, those companies pay a portion of the cost to Dell for the advertising.

Happy with Dell

AUTHOR: Ruben - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 22, 2006

I was looking to buy a laptop and was suggested dell. Looked at their advertisement, saw something I liked. I gave them a call, let know what I wanted, added a few upgrades, still got it at advertised price plus the cost of upgrades. Still have it and very happy with it. I do not understand how it is bait and switch when they build the computer to fit your needs.

Rebuttal to the Rebuttal

AUTHOR: Howard - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 22, 2006

I am pleased that my report on Dell Computers is bringing responses, but come on, look at what they are saying. #1 wants us to believe that Dell builds computers to advertise but not to sell. It sounds as if #1 could be one of those people who wants to build you a higher price machine than you want. I am not a first time buyer. I knew what I wanted, and I bought what I wanted, but not from Dell.

#2 is upset that in the State of Wisconsin, the agency that looks into issues of fraud is the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. In Wisconsin, it is, cows and computers alike. It is good to see that people read you complaints, but this kind of rebuttal really doesn't advance the discussion.

Up to this point, no one has written in saying that they wanted the advertised special and were thrilled with the service, or that Dell Customer Service is other than I have described.
Thankfully, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture has taken the matter seriously.

The Department of Agriculture?!

What does the Department of Agriculture in Wisconsin have to do with an online purchase from Dell?

Is Dell selling cows online??

Dell specializes in custom computers

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Dell specializes in custom, made-to-order computers. It is quite likely that after telling your computing needs to the salesperson, the "advertised special" (aka cheap junk of the week) was not suitable for what you needed a computer for, and therefore they were trying to turn you to other machines. Is this bait and switch? Not at all. They were simply trying to sell you a computer that would function in the manner that you require it to. Buying the "advertised special" may have been cheaper, but you would not have been happy with it and likely would have complained to Dell and tried to get a refund. Again, this is why Dell salespeople inquire about your computing needs and turn you to the appropriate system accordingly.

As for the "advertised special" #2 not showing up online, sale items at Dell.com change daily, and so you must check the website regularly. What was "advertised" yesterday may not be available today. Bait and switch again? Ha! I don't think so.

In closing, I'd like to add that your "bait and switch" accusation is quite funny, seeing as how computers only get cheaper these days, not more expensive. If the "advertised special" is not available today, big deal. Next week there will be a bigger and better "advertised special" and it will be cheaper too.
