Actually you are correct, my experience is rather limited, in those days I sold mainly PDP-11, LSI 11/23, and later migrated to VME bus architecture.  My experience with application software was limited to development software for the mixed signal ASICs, and digital ASICs.  Hey , I know how to use acronyms. Granted, the last few years, most application software is devoted to my day trading, on various homemade computers, since I am retired from 30 years in systems and semiconductor sales. I realize that charting  and trading software is nowhere near your perceived complexity of Quicken Financial , therefore sorry to question early or premature  obsolescence . 
 
As previously stated before, that is the problem with this country; most of the simpletons are pre-programmed not to question the system.

  I though I answered this with Luckily, I was able to find a update for $20, which means less of a learning curve than starting anew with a different financial package.

   You are hilarious.   Before I was born, eh?   I'll give you a clue, when I began working on IBM 360s in the 1970s, the 8088 hadn't been invented, the IBM PC (we knew it as the 5150) wasn't even a gleam in the engineers' eyes yet and punch cards were all the rage.   We also were from a generation that is a lot less arrogant and condescending about technology than later ones.

   Now, Mr. Computer.  If you are so chock full of computer system knowledge, explain why you do not know what EOL is and why it is such a surprise to you?    I am still in the industry and have to deal with EOL issues on a very regular basis, much as we did back in the '70s.   If you are the expert you say you are, this should be no surprise to you.   I suspect you are either not what you say you are, or you were just looking for a reason to whine about having to update your software.

Brilliant, you are evidently of a different generation, where Windows 95/98  is evidently the same as Quicken 2009, it doesnt take differential calculus to realize we are talking fourteen years difference.  Secondly, the changes are relatively subtle, and there is no justification other than added revenue.  Quicken is not rocket science, unlike what most of the sheeple believe, and not questioning motives is unfortunately why we are in such a sad state today.  (Deficits, Obama, Lack of jobs, bankster and wallst, and the semi literate society of this country that question nothing) .

  Inevitably, every release of software (Quicken or others) comes to what is called "End of Life" where it is no longer supported.    This is not really a ripoff, it's just a fact of life in the software industry.   If you're a PC user, you may have notice that no one uses Windows 95 or 98 anymore.  Same deal.  They eventually hit their EOL and were no longer supported. 

  The Quicken person was correct that it is not econimically feasable to continue to support old versions. It costs a lot of man-hours to maintain complex products.  This is particularly true with financial software that has to deal with regulatory and industry changes on a regular basis.

   Good luck finding a financial package that is guaranteed to be supported indefinitely.  No software vendor is going to do that.
