I live part-time in China. Back in December of 2022, I booked a plane ticket on Japan Airlines (from Beijing to Dallas) via Travelocity. I was to fly to Dallas on Christmas day. I also purchased their cancelation insurance since the flight was non-refundable.

On December 10th, I contracted COVID. The insurance specifically listed COVID as an illness that was covered. I waited until Dec. 23rd to see if I was going to be well enough to fly. I was still running a temp of 102-104. I was very, very sick. I was alone and had no clue how to get to a hospital or doctor.

I went to Travelocity's website to cancel my flight. I got an error message saying that they had a glitch in their system and that I needed to call an 800 number. Well, the only way I could figure out how to call an American 800 number from China was through my Skype account. I was successful in making the call and stayed on hold for over an hour. I was so sick that I could barely get to the bathroom. I finally hung up. I called back 3-4 times after that and met with the same situation.

At that point, I realized that it was a scam. No way to cancel the flight which prohibited me from making a claim on the insurance that I'd purchased. I lost over $2,000 (which included the premium I paid for the so-called insurance). I went to my bank and their anti-fraud department was powerless to help me.

Beware of Travelocity period. Certainly don't buy their travel protection insurance. (Book directly with the airline whenever possible.) It is a scam. I also learned that Expedia owns Travelocity. I'm assuming that they have the same type of situation set up that make it impossible for you to cancel and collect on the travel insurance.

AUTHOR: Irv - (United States)

You DO NOT need any of these shysters. You make your own reservations directly with the airline. The GOAL of these third party trash is ro come up with some way, some technicality, some scheme to keep your money. THEY ARE ALL TRASH!
