I have an unconventional Service Contract with Assurant Solutions. Unconventional in the respect that there is no expiration date (as long as monthly fee is paid, protection remains active) and five appliance are covered under the single service contract.  I recently had a two-year-old covered (or so I thought) on a clothes washer which totally destroy itself.

I called Assurant Solutions and they sent out a GE Service Technician who deemed the washer unrepairable. So they sent out a second technician who also said that the unit was unrepairable. They both told me that someone would be back in touch with me. No one ever was.  So I called them. And this is where it got interesting. The more people I talked to, the less I knew about how they were going to handle this problem.

To make a long story short, I was paid about 1/3 of the replacement cost, although the warranty says that they will 'replace' units that are unrepairable.  No one said anything about prorate, but with no end date to my service contract, prorating is a moot point anyway since infinity divided by anything is still infinity.  They finally quoted a paltry sum that they were 'willing' to pay toward the purchase of a new washer, roughly 1/3 the cost of a replacement unit.

I have paid on this service contract for a total of about 20 years and have had very few claims during that time.  Assurant Solutions is one of the most poorly run companies I have ever encountered. Talk to five different people, get five different answers, all with the underlying theme, "We won't help and we don't have to."

So right now, the issue is in Limbo. As far as Assurant is concerned, they have fulfilled the terms of the service contract and have closed the case. As far as I'm concerned, Small Claims Court is open 5-days/week, and I can and will take advantage of the service it provides. This claim is FAR from over.
