I purchased a vehicle from Drivetime on Oct 15th, 2007. Just THREE days after getting the car, it died on me. I called DT and reported it, and I was told it was fine, the car had just been sitting a little while, etc. It ran okay for a while after that, but around December, it started to die on me more and more frequently. By January of 2008, it was overheating for no reason, and smoking, even though the temperature guage was reading normal. It died on me more times than I can count, and I called DT and bitched at them, but they only told me to take it to their 'certified vendor', which happens to be this hole-in-the-wall sort of place called G&H Tires on Beach Blvd. Well, we took it there, and guess what? he found nothing wrong with it! After it died on me about two more times in a three day period, my then boyfriend called DT and yelled at them and had to talk to FOUR different departments, of which three of them promised that managers would call us back. We finally, after TWO HOURS of dealing with them, got them to say that he could diagnose the vehicle, as long as G&H Tires fixed it. We took it to his shop and diagnosed it easily as the cracked thermostat housing. We took it to the vendor, and they said "Nothing is wrong with that," even though we'd just seen the broken housing ourselves. They didn't even print anything up for the times that we went after the first visit, just told us there was nothing wrong with it!(BTW-We never got a call back from a manager, and the warranty on the car just so happened to be almost gone at that point!)
We talked to DT corporate, their several depts that kept pushing us off on other depts, and even went into their office where we purchased the car. NO ONE WOULD HELP US. We were promised about sixth different times that a manager from corporate would call us back. No one did. They didn't care, so long as we paid them the $375 payment a month! Finally, we just decided to fix the car ourselves, officially voiding the warranty. It ran okay for a few more months before it started to die on me mysteriously again. Everytime we took it into a mechanic shop, they would tell us they found nothing wrong with it-even though the problems with the car ranged from:
Strange vibrations, overly-excessive idling at lights or stops, refusing to start, refusing to run, dying when it had only been driven a distance of a couple hundred feet, windows not working(started with the back, now the driver side as well), air has a strange burning smell when left on for more than ten minutes, gas consumption of less than 20 MPG. These all happened within the first 8 months of having the vehicle, and now it is Aug, and I have not even had it for a year!
There are several other causes for concern, but most recently, I had my check engine light coming on. The next day, it wouldn't start. My then boyfriend jumped it, and it ran fine, but the next week, the battery light came on again while I was driving to work. When I got there, it died. I took a lunch break and drove it a couple blocks down the road to my brother's shop, but on the way there it died again. I had to have him put a portable charger on the battery and drive down the road at ten miles an hour to get to the shop, where we found out that my alternator was COMPLETELY dead. The battery was so drained that it couldn't hold charge anymore. I have no vehicle as of right now, because it is sitting in front of a shop collecting dust because I cannot afford to pay $400 to have a new battery and alternator installed. I have still had to make payments on the car, even though I can't drive it!
I called DT corporate, and got one of the rudest, snottiest cust. managers I have ever spoken to.(Yes, I'm talking about you Brandy!) She basically told me to piss off, because since it wasn't under warranty, DT wouldn't fix it. I was assured by her and another rep that I would be called back by a Manager,(it seems that every time I call, they are in meetings ALL DAY) and that because I filed a BBB report against them, I had a seperate account manager, who wasn't even there to talk to me! So no one called me back, now two weeks later, and no one would help me since I filed with the BBB! Drivetime is a scam artist and they sell you lemons! Don't buy from them!

i agree that regardless of your credit/payment history, the CAR was the problem...most of the time it is, at Drivetime...out of a good month of maybe, 35 cars sold, i would see at least ten or fifteen come back with problems. while i worked there, back in 06, i referred a friend to get a car there...he JUST got it back on the road after blowing a head gasket and transmission, conveniently after the warranty was expired. what they will do is have you take message after message from customers stating that the person isnt there, just ticking away days off that warranty. you have to get in your car (or get someone to tow you, because the car probably isnt working lol) and not leave until things are done. we had one customer call AAA and have them tow the car to our lot and she did refused to leave until she had a car rented for her from Enterprise and the promise of a new vehicle. she was the only one i EVER saw get anything done.
one of the worst things i witnessed was the lack of a signature on the 'buyback form'. yes, thats right. there is a form in your contract that promises the car will be bought back from you if that background check is incorrect and the car must be repaired. part of my job was to sort and file the contracts. most had no signature on that form, and if it did, was never mailed off. i myself mailed off probably 45-50 of these forms, seeing as how the associates didnt care whether they made it or not. and why would they? if the car was bought back, it counted against them and their sales (which wasnt fair to them, they are salespeople, not mechanics...) part of my job was to go thru the contracts and make sure everything was signed...i saw first hand, manager after manager go thru those contracts, ignore that sheet, and give the contract to us to file away...period.
more than a handful of the cars for sale there are trade ins from other customers. some would trade in cars, get about 2k for their trade, we would clean and fix minor issues, check the blue book value, smack another $5k on it, and it was on the lot a week or two later. always made me wonder why some of these people traded in decent cars...
... it is a RED hot lie that everyone who comes there has credit problems. dont let managers on here tell you that. they score the credit on an A to F scale. even with no credit you will get a C or so. there were plenty of people with A grade credit who didnt know it (they were NOT told they had awesome credit at all!) and bought a car there anyway. just be sure to warn everyone you know and complain as much as possible, i cant tell u anything else to do! good luck in the future...

It is obvious that you have no clue about what was going on. How dare you presume to know the circumstances of my life and what I was going through at that point in time? Yes, I was in a pinch for more than one reason, and my ex boyfriend, being a mechanic, told me that he had dealt with people from the company before and they all seemed on the up and up. I had NEVER bought a car before, so yes, I was naive, but that does in NO WAY mean that I was responsible for the shitty product that was sold to me.
If you are starving, and you decide to buy an apple, you look at it, feel it, smell it and think to yourself, "Okay, I need this apple, and it looks like it's a good apple, I'm going to get it." Now, later, after you've gotten it, you realize that the inside of the apple if ROTTEN. That's not your fault. To the extent of whatever knowledge or information that you had at that time you were lead to believe it was a good product, and just so happened to fit your needs perfectly. Let's add in the fact that hundreds, if not thousands, of people have bought product from this same vendor. They have complained of the rotten fruit also. That's not my fault as the consumer. That's the company's fault for selling bad products.
As for whether or not I made my payments on time, that is none of your goddamned business. Whether or not my credit was affected? None of your goddamned business! You have no position to comment on MY PERSONAL SITUATION. My complaint against the company, sure! Argue that all day long, but you don't know me! How dare you assume that this is my fault? Especially after the pages and pages of compaints on this site alone against that company?
I'm not entirely blameless, and this is why: Yes-I was hasty because of my situation(Which you don't know, so don't judge it) Yes, I was naive seeing as it was my first car buying experience.(I did do some research, but it was mainly on bigger car dealers which I didn't end up going to because I was worried that since I had NO CAR CREDIT, they wouldn't lend to me. It wasn't a matter of bad credit.) I am not 25, so I did not have any way to rent a vehicle. I was in a situation and needed a vehicle. But, guess what? That still means that DT sold me A LEMON.
If it hadn't have been me buying it, if it was someone else, that car would still be A LEMON. My situation, and my decisions do not change the fact that the product I was sold was faulty.
You obviously work for Drivetime or another company in the finance division, and so I'm sure are only interested in making me look bad so that it appears that I have made all the mistakes, and not the company. Well, you know what? My complaints on here only add a dent into the long list of complaints against this company. That says a little bit more than your weak attempt to make it look like the car being crap was my fault.

I am sure NONE of this was your fault

Especially the fact that your credit was too poor to get a vehicle through conventional financing.
You are a consumer. It's YOUR resposibility to check out companies before you purchase a vehicle. Even though the headgasket went out in your vehicle so you HAD to buy a vehicle that day (which is incorrect), you should have done your proper research. You could have rented a car for a couple of days until you figured out what would be the best financial decision for you - but you obviously didn't do this.
I am interested if you went ahead and made ALL of your Drivetime payments on time? Have you been successful in rebuilding your credit?
The reason that you were charged the price for the vehicle that you were - and had the payments you did would be because car finance companies are in the business to make money - and for the same reason prices for clothes are inflated to make up for shoplifters - car prices are also raised to make up for people who don't follow through with their car payments and wind up with a repossession.
Take some personal responsibility for the actions and steps you took before you purchased the vehicle.

I paid a ridiculously high amount of money, about 11991 after signing, with payments of 186.44 twice a month, coming to about 375 a month! The interest was also very high, somewhere around 26%. I would have gone somewhere else, but I had zilch credit and the head gasket in my car had blown the day before and I needed a new one pretty badly. However, no matter how desperate your situation is, do not go to Drivetime!
