Just relating my experience with Esurance.
They hit my credit card several weeks before I got my statement. When I saw the credit card statement, I was surprised by how much my insurance was (I do the pay in full every 6 months so I expected to to be reasonable). I noticed they had raised it $50 since the last time I got insurance. So...I went looking on the internet and found it substantially cheaper at Geico which I promptly signed up for.
When I called Esurance to cancel, they tried to rerate me on the phone. I mentioned that if they had not jacked my rate for no reason, we would not be having the conversation. No response. Then they told me buried in their contract that they charge a 10% cancellation fee basically because they can. I have not found this to be the case with any other insurer. Is this how they hope to keep customers loyal; by employing punitive measures if they try to leave?
Overall my experience with the company was poor. I had a minor accident in which another driver rolled into the back of my car at a stop light. Clearly it was the other drivers fault. When I reported it to Esurance, it was as if they could not care less and they wanted to close the claim and get me off the phone as quickly as possible. Again, terrible customer service and for all their "born online" low cost approach, they are not cheap at all.
There really should be CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT against them for charging an 10% cancellation fee without better informing consumers before consumers agree to the twenty page contract to get insurance.

Regardless of what you think..you have pretty much described what is standard .
They hit my credit card several weeks before I got my statement. When I saw the credit card statement,
- Serveral weeks? Isn't that just a bit of an exageration. Because insurance companies will send you out a renewal notice about 30 days in advance. Where on a 6-Month term you are actually making it sound like you would have had your insurance for a month before they sent you out renewal notices. Besides at several weeks by the time you noticed your insurance policy still would not be past the renewal day.
I noticed they had raised it $50 since the last time I got insurance.
- $50 increase from what? There is a big difference if your previous amount was $200 or $2000.
When I called Esurance to cancel, they tried to rerate me on the phone
- So when they offered did you let them do it? Because what happens if your current insurance decides to "jack up" your rates at the next renewal. Allowing a company to "rerate" you could get you a better rate even with the same company.
...I have not found this to be the case with any other insurer.
- Oh really..there are many that actually do and some "major" ones as well. Did you actually specifically ask your current insurance if they have a Early Cancellation fee.
When I reported it to Esurance, it was as if they could not care less and they wanted to close the claim and get me off the phone as quickly as possible.
- Yes, because you really should have been dealing with the other insurance company.
There really should be CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT against them for charging an 10% cancellation fee without better informing consumers before consumers agree to the twenty page contract to get insurance.
- And just how many pages was the Terms of the Insurance you got?
