I purchased a power tool that was on sale at $149 (Ridgid Twinblade Five Inch rotary power saw with counterrotating blades). I used the tool for 2 1/2 years, and found it to work very well, until I noticed that some parts where the blades attach had worn down. So, going online to register the tool, I was asked to provide some numbers off the receipt. I found the receipt and started looking for the numbers. In the process of doing this, with my magnifying glasses on, I found that the numbers needed had been written with disappearing ink, making it impossible to register my tool for repair or service online. When I tried to register the tool, the website seemed to malfunction completely. So I was repeatedly trying to register the tool properly but was unable to do so. In the process, I also noticed something quite alarming. I had purhased this $149 tool back on 8/9/2012, partly because the tool was on sale. I also purchased a few other minor items.

But looking at this old receipt, I noticed a discrepancy. Instead of the receipt listing one Ridgid Twinblade @ $149, it listed "2@$149" and the charge was therefore not $149, but was actually $258.00. Now even though I feel like an idiot, because I did not carefully verify the charged amount before leaving the store, the fact is that the cashier could not have "made a mistake" and charged me for two saws, because I had just one saw at the counter, and had only a few other items (some bungie cords, and one small plastic case full of 14 Ridgid screwdriver heads. So I feel that I was scammed. If the cashier does this once in a while, only to people who look distraught or harried, and therefore unlikely to check, then it's likely that someone is getting free hardware, or that in some way the cashier can benefit from this type of "mistake." The charge was made to my credit card. Looking at the receipt quickly on the way out, I must have seen the $149 and just carelessly thought it was okay. I remember thinking, I can't believe it is that high, but somehow didn't carefully read through the receipt, having other errands to do with limited time, nor did I go back into the store.

Yes, I feel like an idiot, but this is possibly a big source of income for someone. If such "errors" are randomly designed into software, they could be bringing in huge amounts of profit for the company or companies involved. And if it is random and occasional, the suspicion will not become too great. I don't know who to suspect, but I suspect I was greatly ripped off. And 2 1/2 years later, I see it as total idiocy on my part, and unlikely to be resolved in my favor, unless there is a camera that recorded the purchase in which case it will be easy to see that I purchased just one Ridgid Twinblade power saw.

The item was on sale for $129, not $149.

I went to Home Depot today and discussed this problem with Customer Service. The man there was very courteous, and when I started to describe the situation, he pointed out that the item sale price was $129, not $149 as I wrote on this site. So, anyway, after I had explained the "double billing" of this item, and explained that this occurred 2 1/2 years ago, he just said there was nothing he could do. So, I may be able to get the saw repaired locally but there's no way I can get refunded for the "double billing." Yes, I should have noticed the error immediately, before leaving the store. I was in a hurry to get back because we had someone here who would be very irate with me if I arrived a minute late. So I didn't carefully look at the receipt. The compounding of errors on this was ridiculous, but I pretty much accept the blame on it. Thanks for looking at my report. By the way, I have a high regard for the "double counterrotating blade" saw design for cutting metal. It works great and is safe as long as you don't try to use the same blades for too long. I sort of wish I was doubled billed for the bungie cords instead. Oh well, live and learn.

Sometimes the scanner will register twice is there is an uneven movement or rescan.  I've had it happen occasionally in other stores and try now to check my receipt before leaving the store.  I'm surprised you didn't notice this on your credit card bill.
