I went to Kay Jewelers at Eastview Mall in Victor NY to purchase a $300 wedding band for my husband (to replace an older one that was beat up) While there I had my Original Engagement Diamond ring ($1000 20 years ago) and Anniversary Ring ($4100 8 years ago) cleaned. These were purchased from a real Jewelry store Not Kay.

After cleaning and examining them, they said that All the diamonds were loose in both rings and recommended that they get tightened and can be shipped out with the sizing of the new purchased ring and they would all return the same time. Fell for it!!! 10 days later stopped in only to find out that the shipment was lost by their carrier UPS. They offered a store credit for equal or lesser (you get the picture).

My Husband went to the store and furiously demanded the total value in cash ($5100 plus tax, not including appreciation value) to no avail. He called customer service and they repeated the store policy of equal or lesser value credit (you get the picture).

They were Negligent, I get to pick 5100 worth of there crap jewelry, and they get a Full Insurance claim out of the deal Lesson learned, never let your Sentimental Jewelry out of your sight, and certainly never let them talk you into shipping it anywhere without a retainer from them for the Full appraisal value. Husband is speaking with an Attorney and considering taking them to court on Principle.

What About YOUR Insurance Company?

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 03, 2009

Why didn't you contact your insurance company where I know you had these valuable rings insured. Oh, wait, I know, YOU didn't HAVE insurance on these valuable rings. Talk about negligence. What is it now to have an insurance "rider" up to $5,000 on a piece of jewelry $50 to $60 per year, WITH NO DEDUCTABLE. Then you wouldn't have to be dealing with kay's. YOU could just collect the FULL APPRAISED AMOUNT from YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY and go out and buy some QUALITY jewelry from a REAL jeweler. Now you're gonna get about a $1,000 to $1,200 worth of crap. Your insurance company would be screwing around with kay's or UPS. Try buying some REAL insurance next time and not that imitation crap they try and sell you at a jewelry store. And that's 25+ years of jewelry experience talking. You should have taken it to a local shop anyway.

Um... so if Kay wasn't planning on paying for jewelry if lost that should be the first words out of an associates mouth when they realize the origional jewelry wasn't bought at Kay. Anyone who knows anything knows Kay jewelry is worth nothing in the rest of the world! go ahead and try to resell kay jewelry to any real jeweler... they'll laugh in your face.

Kay not negligent

First UPS lost the shipment not Kay. Secondly when you left the merchandise you had to have signed the repair ticket, that stated what would happen in the event it was lost (merchandise replacement with like or similar merchandise not cash) and the value sounds like the value or price you quoted. It is rare but shipments do get lost the store and company hates it as bad if not worse then you, after all the was more than just your merchandise in the box. Can't give out details but as for as their insurance claim, they don't not make money on these incidents, they lose money and goodwill.
