In 2005, I signed what I believed to be a 1-year contract with Lady of America. In 2007, I phoned the location to cancel what I believed to be a then month-to-month contract, and was told that I had signed a 3-year contract so I could not.

I have never signed a 3-year contract for anything. I rarely stay in a job for 3-years, much less a gym. So I asked that my contract be sent to me. After many, many phone calls to many different people at the corporate headquarters, and many, many different stories about how they couldn't get to my contract, for various different reasons, I was finally given the name of the franchise owner by one of the staff at my location, and he faxed me the contract.

He was very professional & helpful, and said that things at the gym would change, but I was still upset about the fraudulent contract. When I received the contract, it became obvious to me that after I had signed what I believed to be a 1-year contract, someone at the location had then circled the "3-year" contract length.

Granted, I should have read the contract. And, I should have researched the company before I signed a contract. I am now very upset with myself for not doing so, and I'm hoping that this information will keep others from making the same mistake. If I had visited the gym more than once, I would have noticed that the staff literally turns over every 2 weeks, which is a very bad sign. I'm guessing asking them to commit fraud doesn't sit will with most of them.
