Mediacom cable is the biggest rip off for cable service! After paying hundreds of dollars per month for cable and internet (with DVR service), i bought two TiVo boxes to replace the 40.00 per month in charges from mediacom for their dvr boxes (which by the way almost set my house on fire because the power supplies overheat constantly). I was told on three different occaisons by mediacom representatives that I would only need two cable cards from them (at a rate of 1.99 per month per card). So after confirming, recording them saying this, I go ahead. Now I get a bill and their is still all of these stupid "digital gateway" fees on my bill. My bill actually went up by 20.00 per month by removing the DVR service. This is a rip-off.

Now lets move on to Mediacom's high speed internet. I will give them credit, that their internet is fast, when it is working. The problem is, that about 15% of the time, it's not working! Of course when I call mediacoms phone numbers I have to try to call on average 45 minutes before the line is not busy, and then the average hold time is 30 minutes before you speak to a person. That person is never, ever, ever, ever able to answer your question without putting you on hold for an additional 10 to 45 minutes, and when they come back, the answer regarding internet service is always:
"We have had a fiber optic cable cut and we are working to fix the problem. We have no estimate of when the problem will be corrected".

The 5th time I was told this, I requested the location of the cable cut. Dead silence on the end of the line.....I further explained that I was a reporter for a local television network and wanted to get to the scene of the fiber cut to film the crews repairing the problem. The person on the other end of the line was completely lost....she took my information down and said someone would call me back. Imagine to my suprise when the VP of operations called me back within the hour. He left me a message stating that the cable cut had been repaired and the crews were gone, therefore there was no point in telling me where, since there would be nothing to see at the location.

Can you say ....bullsh*t? The fiber cable cut story is a common excuse that they use to appease most callers.

I have also been promised a credit for down time, which has never happened. By my calculations, mediacom owes me in excess of 90.00 in credits that I have never seen. The reality is usually when they promise a credit, they screw the bill up and end up adding additional charges that shouldn't be there.

Mediacom is a complete rip off in both their cable offerings and their high speed internet. Their customer service is a joke and has yet to be of any help to me.

As I type this report, I sit on hold, waiting for a real person to explain why I still have DVR related fees on my bill for DVRs that I have not had in my home for over two months. I'm sure I will be told one thing, but my bill will reflect another.

And they want me to use them for telephone service...I can see why...if I use their telephone service I'll never be able to call and complain because their service goes down so much!

Do not waste your time, or money on Mediacom Cable. There is no reason that my cable and internet bill should be pushing 200.00 per month! I have no premium channels, no on demand or pay per view access. The family cable rate is $54.00 per month, the internet is $46.00 per month, and then they hit you with another 60 to 70 dollars a month in fees and taxes. It's ridiculous. My bill would be over 400.00 per month if I had all of the premium channels and offerings that mediacom has.

And do not fall prey to their bundled services scam. This scam offers you internet for 29.99 per month, cable for 29.99 per month and telephone for 29.99 per month....FOR A LIMITED TIME. after the limited time is up, I guarantee your bill will be as much or more than your car payment.

I'm switching my internet to XXX on Monday, and I'm dropping my cable to the lowest basic "lifeline" cable option that mediacom offers. Maybe I can get that bill down below one hundred dollars. We'll see.

The 'cut fiber optic cable' excuse :)

I called on a Sunday morning around 5 a.m. to tell them my internet was once again out of order.

I asked them how this can happen. I was told someone digging, doing construction etc.

I then asked who on earth would be doing such a thing in the dark on a Sunday morning.

The crickets were deafening.

Mediacom

I also had many of the problems you reported. I dropped Mediacom cable 3 months ago and went with one of the satellite companies. My video package includes ALL premium channels ( HBO, SHO, Encore, Starz, Cinemax, etc ), all HD channels ( about 100 of these at present, where Mediacom has fewer than 20 ), all basic and extended channels, all music channels ( including Sirius ), and all of my local channels - for LESS than you are paying right now. I did keep the Mediacom internet, as I have internet phone ( not Mediacom's though, and my phone plan includes UNLIMITED FREE long distance to anywhere in NORTH AMERICA and EUROPE ). In fact, my total bill for satellite, internet, and phone is under $200 a month. Go with satellite, if at all possible. I wish I had dropped them years ago !! You get so much more for your money than with Mediacom.
