What every consumer should know about Mr. Rooter Plumbing.

I had the dis-pleasure of having a Mr. Rooter service man come to my home. The young man came to my home when I was at work and my wife was home. The service man was scheduled to be at my home between 7am and 8:30 am, at 10am I could wait no longer and left a check with my wife. I realize every company deserves to make a profit but this was crazy. I had a toilet blockage and was told the cost would not exceed $125.00 dollars, imagine my shock and horror when I returned home and found my wife in tears and my bank account was $2785.00 dollars lighter. I made several calls to the office only to be met with a fast talking man named rick and his side kick danny, I was going no where fast. This is where it gets very interesting!!!!!!!!!! The following week we received a unexpected visitor, the service plumber from Mr. Rooter, He stated he was so very sory he has had a hard time sleeping, he talked it over with his wife and they agreed he needed a new job, he even tried handing me a personal check for $500 dollars, I couldnt take this young mans money. He stated he is or was a commisioned employee and if they do not produce X amount a week they will be terminated. Mr Rooter trains the employees to sell sell sell, they attend meetings called S.W.A.T that trains them on selling techniques. The core customer base is female's and seniors. He explained that every company keeps a "BIG BOARD" this is a board that is used to motivate or humiliate! it displays the amount of money the service men have charged, this includes job averages and closing rates.

He even explained the "C.P.P" Program (Customer Protection Plan) This is a program that is supposed to offer benefits and savings to the members. He explained that a member is supposed to recieve 15% off each service call but his owner Rick teaches them how to raise the price 18% than remove the 15% thus the members of this so called plan ends up paying an additional 3% higher than non members. The service man brought over an entire folder at least 3" thick that offered literture backing up everything he told me. He said the owner is not even a plumber and in fact the license used belongs to a man that no one has ever met, I researched that as well and its true, I contacted the state and I was told this is something they want to phase out and that the gentleman is called a qualifier and is suppose to be overseeing the day to day operations of the company. I was also told they are trained to offer "FREE" Home inspections, this is where they sell the "ADD ONS" this is big its as close to being a bait and switch scam as I ever seen. The "FREE Camera is used to find the smallest items in the sewer and he states they become severly magnified by the camera creating panic, they are trained to up sell. MR Rooter will not allow the service man to cary a toilet auger, he stated they are trained to pull and reset the toilet because they can triple the charge. Mr Rooter Is a franchise that is owned by Dwyer who also owns Mr Electric, Glass Doctor, Rainbow, Mr Appliance and a few others.

What ever happened to a knowledable plumber, these men and women are trained to be sales men not plumbers they are trained to steal and when confronted they have justifications for everything well at least in their minds. Do Not Use a Franchise, Do not fall for the free home inspection or video, look them up on line or check with the clerk of courts you will be amazed. Watch them smile as they rob you blind. As a commision employee the more they sell the more they make so unless you have lots of money you wish to donate to your local franchise hire local contractors that do not charge commission, get a written price up front read the fine print and find someone you can trust...

Sounds about right, actually...

Hey, Harley... I remember a Mr. Rooter "plumber" was trying to insist that he had to rip the walls out behind our bathtub faucet head, shower head and taps and replace all the piping inside... For a simple tap leak.

Another plumber, a real one, found that the tap valve stems were just worn, replaced them and was on his way in about 15 - 20mins.

Now, funny you should mention the certification... real funny, Because, you see, the guy who came to our place wasn't a certified/licensed plumber either! How about that??

Nice to know about the other "faces" of Mr. Rooter too, thanks! I'll be sure and steer clear of any of these operations operated by Dwyer, if they exist in my area. After all, if the "business model" works for one sham, you can bet it's applied to all of 'em.

Also, seems like it's not just seniors and females. Looks like they target property management outfits too, because that's what were were living under when our little shamster came to our door. Property management can't always come out of oversee every little detail of every single property every time, and I'm sure the fine, fine operators of Mr. Rooter franchises are well aware of this.

I'm finding a lot of similarities in the tales of others in the RoRs here...
