I was solicited over the phone in response to a request for information on affordable health care in relation to the Affordable Health Care Act. Brett Taylor stated he was a broker from the National Congress of Employers with an opportunity for me to join a group in order to obtain reasonably priced insurance. It was supposed to be limited coverage, 3 fully covered dr. visits, 1 Wellness exam, full coverage for emergency room plus 60%unlimited discount on all dental, eye and prescriptions, with no deductable, For $120/month with a 1 time $60 membership. I asked for a website, pamphlets to review and was told these were unavailable until I "reserved a spot". I was told I could cancel at any time. Unfortunately I did not pay attention to all the Red Flags and gave them my credit card #. Fortunately for me, I gave them my Discover Platinum card and refused to give my SS#. After the call I researched the company and could find nothing positive or legitimate! I called to cancel and was told I could not cancel until I received my "packet of information" in the mail. Meanwhile I called Discover to find $180 had already been charged to my account. I now have to wait the "7-14 working days" for my "packet" to even begin the cancellation. I have found reports from people stating that they never even received their Packet of info! Discover told me I am covered through them but I have to follow procedure and try to cancel through the Insurance Co. If I get nothing there, Discover will dispute the charge.
I find this scam to be particularly reprehensible because it targets the sick and poorest of the poor! I'm sure some folk give out SS#s and/or debit cards and think they finally have some access to health care. Please don't get sucked into this scam!

I am insured by Unified Life Insurance Company, part of The National Congress of Employers Health Discount Program. I purchased coverage in June of 2013. When I quit my job in April of 2013, I lost my group medical coverage and needed something temporarily until I would be covered by Medicare in December of 2013.
My budget for insurance was small because I was not working, so I chose to be covered by Unified Life even though its benefits were very limited. Better coverage would have cost me a lot more money. I was also betting that because my health was very good and because I needed this insurance for only a few months, the meager benefits would be good enough.
Unfortunately I lost that bet! A few days after my coverage went into effect, I developed symptoms serious enough to have to go to first, a walk-in clinic and then the emergency room at a hospital. The next day I saw an eye specialist and had my first visit to my new primary doctor. This physician ordered a blood test at a lab and, subsequently I had to visit this doctor one more time before the correct medication was prescribed for me. With a follow-up appointment at the ophthalmologist, within six weeks I had used up all my benefits for doctor's visits and lab work, etc. except for coverage for being admitted to the hospital. Hopefully that won't happen until I go on Medicare!
I have been sent payment for all the benefits for which I was covered so far by this insurance company and have no complaints. I wish now I had selected a company with better coverage, but that was my choice. I would drop the insurance for the last month except for the fact that it offers excellent drug coverage and one of my new prescriptions would be very costly without it. So far I don't see anything fraudulent at all about Unified Life or The National Congress of Employers.
