Let me start by saying we booked our first overdue vacation in three yrs On 5/14/10. And we will regret it forever, With N C L On the Spirit for 7 nights to Bermuda from Boston. Almost upon boarding, The Spirit; We as most guests where informed our staterooms were not ready and we would have to wait.

Not so bad right?  It gets better, So we go up to deck 12 to sit and wait for notification that our stateroom was ready we barely got to the pool area past raffles and my wife to be was using hand sanitizer from a wall mounted dispenser, so of course I do as well and just as we turned to walk away a crewman who was right behind us loudly speaking Washy Washy Happy Happy proceeds to douse our hands again w/o warning or request to do so.   Granted hand sanitizing is Good idea but we where made out to feel Like five yr old children and felt Embarrassed in front of the other guests as this idiot was displaying us as hand washing models.

After that scene we finally sat at the pool deck and where ask by another server what would you like to drink still agitated by Mr washy washy and not even able to get to our stateroom as of yet we respectfully decline.  Over the next ten or so minutes four others had solicited us to buy drinks at least twice each, we finally order in attempt have them stop pestering us.{NOTE the drinks are 1 to strong 2 ridiculously expensive} We now believe these where made like that to prepare us to view our staterooms, after the ship left the dock about 45 minutes to an hour we hear over the speaker that our staterooms were ready.

Upon entering our stateroom we notice that our ocean view cabin was nothing more than a water line sealed Porthole, The bathroom floor was covered in a transparent sticky layers of soap scum build up where is the Clorox when you need it, also there was what could only be described at this point as A sickeningly strong odor of air deodorizing spray mixed with a musty odor coming from the ceiling mounted cabin fresh air/ac/ heat vent.

Our luggage had not made it to the room as of yet I had called the information desk and was informed that our luggage would not arrive until about 6 pm. Now agitated further I state if it is not on this tub someone will swim back to Boston for it.       Even more agitated keeping in mind I had purchased our trip with a free upgrade making my way up to the lobby on deck 7 upon arrival I find a lobby full of and a long line of no doubt other agitated guests and of course by the time I got there a sign was up stating we are sorry there are no upgrades available.     But attempted to state our displeasure anyway and noticed right away a language barrier out of convenience was put up as I handed a complaint form which would have ended up in the circular file anyway so i stated to her you will understand this         {N C L Has not heard or will ever hear the end of this}  then I had returned to the cabin to inform my wife to be we where going to have to rough it out for the next 7 nights as this cruise line does care or give a Crap about you me or anyone else except for the all mighty dollar.    Just about then we hear a thump and open the door to find our luggage tossed off the cart in front of the door so we Drag it in and the crew was sucking around waiting for a tip.
So I tell him to look both ways before crossing the st After we both had left to go up to deck 12 to check out the buffet at raffles but in order to get there we had wait for what seemed like forever, only to squeeze in the sealed non vented glass view cocoon of an elevator as others who where sneezing and coughing as all where trapped and exposed to whatever airborne contaminants may have been being passed around.     At our arrival on deck 12 we avoided Mr washy washy as I would have more than likely washy washed  him over the side rail in Massachusetts bay, The food at the buffet was below average the same can be said for the blue lagoon and would prove to become less appetizing over the next 6 days as it was remixed and served as breakfast hash or presented as something different on the following days.

This was in no doubt done to force you onto paying for an equally unsatisfactory and over priced meal at one or more of the overrated  food vendors on board the Spirit,  As it was we can only compare the food as best suited for a military chow line so we survived on hot dogs, Hamburgers, pasta, bagels, mini cereal boxes etc.
Our beverages where simple plastic cups ice and six packs of Diet Pepsi 12oz cans purchased at the bar for an amazing deal of nearly $14.00 WHAT A DEAL !

By the next morning after a restful sleepless night on the most uncomfortable comparative to military issued bunks and inhalation therapy of the musty moldy air coming through the air vent  combined with remaining stench of the sickeningly strong air deodorizing spray which was sprayed every time our cabin was quickly spruced up morning and evening.      It got to the point that I even after asking the steward not to use it he did it anyway so I started placing the do not disturb sign daily in an attempt to keep him out.
So that morning we boarded the sealed glass non vented cocoon and headed up to deck 12 and again fortunate for Mr washy washy who was splitting every ones ears with his repeated loud chanting of Happy Happy, Washy Washy, I was not suffering from a hangover or he would have most assured had his spray bottle for breakfast. As we had ncl's version of an edible breakfast I noticed that my gal was not looking to good no doubt due to the stale musty moldy air being pumped into our stateroom via an obviously poorly maintained fresh air system aboard the Spirit so I kept her out on deck for fresh air as long as I possibly could.
This was to prove later that afternoon it was Too late as she became worse and said to me that she wanted to lie down in the cabin.  Knowing she was not sea sick as she is always out on my boat fishing days at a time if I had a Philips screw driver I would have removed the glass from the porthole to allow fresh air in so I left to sleep a couple of hrs in hope she would feel better.
By that afternoon I had returned to check on her and found that she had called for the cabin steward as she had gotten sick and vomited all over the cabin bathroom now Maybe they would clean it properly as i tried to light a fire under their butts.
At that point I had gone to find the ships doctor only to discover they had set hours and would charge us $130 and no doubt more for something that they would have dubbed as sea sickness.

Later to our fortune I had packed some allergy medication and some pepto these helped but she was sickened by what is best described as Sick Building Syndrome caused by improper maintenance of a ventilation system.
Finally that evening she was up going to the upper decks on her own for fresh air as for me I out of disgust went to one of the bars on board and got smashed.

By the next morning We arrived in Bermuda and due to her allergic reaction she missed out on the helmet dive she was looking forward too for so long as she was congested to the point where she tried but could not equalize.
Well I could continue detailing this wasted vacation for you but I feel you are intelligent enough to make a wise decision on your own as no amount of money is worth you suffering A similar fate as we did. A destroyed vacation home sick in bed out of work until better and this is all due to our gullibility of the ads and brochures put out by NCL.    Thanks to the ineptness of the Norwegian Cruise Line , Obviously Another Greedy entity of a Corporation that is hiding it's rot from the top down to it's keel.

Do research before you go

AUTHOR: Tina - ()

POSTED: Monday, December 08, 2014

To start, I have sailed with Norwegian Cruise Line several times and others cruise lines. I have always had to wait for our room to be cleaned on any cruise line. What do you expect? The ship just came back from a sailing with guests. The cabin stewards do their best to get all the rooms cleaned and perfect as they can.

Its either Washy Washy or Sicky Sicky..I choose Washy Washy. So many outbreaks of illnesses have happened in the cruise industry so this is there way to help control people being sick. I have never heard any one complain about keeping clean, would you want someone that has a cold/flu to touch something and then you end up sick??? Not me, I want to enjoy my vacation, washing my hands in no way interferes with my vacation!

Sorry you were solicited to buy drinks on a cruise I am so shocked I never heard of such a thing. I am not a big alcohol drinker, but most people on a cruise do drink a lot. You should be greatful they did ask if you want to buy a drink. thats their job. They are not making tons of money working on a cruise ship, but they do work their BUTTS off trying to make people enjoy there vacation. Did you complain your drink was rediculously strong?? Hello, you are paying for your drink wouldn't you rather it be strong so you can buy less? And yes, drinks on all cruises (unless you do allinclusive cruise) are very expensive, that's one of the major ways the cruise lines make money. Do you think the cheap prices of the rooms can pay the costs of everything to run that ship?

As far as your room window, NCL (and other cruise lines) puts a discription on EVERY room catergory. Aparenlty you didnt read what you were booking, Like I said DO RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BOOK..Cure for the film on the floor, ask your cabin steward to clean it again. They will no problem! Stinky smell from air filter, maintanence can change the filter and clean the vent. Most cases the smell would be gone! Funny thing, they would do what they could to fix the problem to make you happy. Did you ever even ask them?

Did you really think your luggage would be in your room sooner? That ships hold about 2300 people who ALL have luggage. If you did your research you would of know to have a carry on with you with things you would need in it until you got your luggage. I have seen some people not get their luggage until 10/11pm on carnival, still never heard anyone complain. I have never known anyone not to get their luggage, but I am sure it can happen. That's when trip insurance helps!

Are you really that ignorant? A free upgrade you get when you book one catagory and they upgrade your cabin then to a higher catagory. Free upgrades on the ship are seperate from that and are seperate from the upgrade you got at the time of booking.

I never had the opertunity to tip the workers that drop off my luggage. We are usually out enjoying the ship. If I ever did/do see them I would tip them. And yes, at times they do throw the luggage and handle it rough. They are trying to get all the passengers their luggage as quick as they can. Have you ever seen how the airlines handle your luggage? I worked for an airline, if you want your luggage handled gently, dont fly either!

The elevators do take for ever on all ships and they do get crowded. Thats why most of the time my husband and I take the stairs. Why are you even complaining about the person your trapped with caughing and sneezing? That is one of the reasons they have Washy Washy and you complainded about that. Just think how many people would be sick by the end of the cruise if they didn't do Washy Washy!

You avoided Washy Washy? I hope you mean just the person from the first day and not avoiding washing your hands. And as far as you washing him in MA bay, you would be taken down so quick and put in the brig for the remainder of your cruise.

As far as the food, a buffet is a buffet. What do you expect? Even though I have never had any problem with any food on NCL. I also like the Blue Lagoon for a quick snack, that is all that is. I am glad they remix food and serve it. I like that they feed the fish with the food waste, but if the food is still healthy to eat it should be humans that eat it. The cruise lines are causouse with the food and doing their best to keep it fresh.

They do not try to force you to go to their pay restaurants. They offer plenty of free restraunts and yes, they do offer a lot of the same menu's during the cruise, but they can only offer so much, same as when you stay at an allinclusive hotel! They pay restarants charge per person and offer pretty good food. We love the Italian Restaraunt $15 per person we each have our meal, coffee and desert after and order a meals to take back to our room. So for $30 for 2 people we get 4 meals and 2 deserts and coffee..It would be much more at home!

There is much more there than what you are saying. hamberg and hot dogs I usually get when they have a BBQ at the pool deck, and yes sometimes in the buffet for lunch, but they still offer so much more at the buffee. Maybe you didnt look at all 6 sections of the buffet? I have always seen a large selection. I love the cereal boxes, every morning my husband and I grab a couple boxes and bring them to our room. When we are out on the islands we eat them as snacks.

Once again you didnt do your RESEARCH. EVERY NCL cruise I go on I bring 2, 24 packs of diet coke. and guess what the cruise line dont even charge for me to bring them and they drop them off at my room with my luggage! So your fault you paid so much for soda! NCL also offers a soda package that is fairly cheap.

Some people do find the bed uncomfortable, but the cruise lines cant let their passengers select their mattress. Me personaly, I love their beds and sleep like a baby. Unfortunatly, I think maybe the comunication between you and the cabin steward wasn't good sometimes that happens. Most of the workers are not americans, they are trained, but at times there still is a communication barrier. You could have called the number that's on the phone that say's housekeeping and they could of solved all your cabin issues for you.

Your lucky you didn't attempt to touch Mr. Washy Washy. Although from what you posted, you would of tried to make it his fault for your action.

Your Gal may have been sick from the airborne contaminates that you were exposed to in the elevator. Thats the reason for Mr. Wash Washy and all the other Washy Washy team! I dont like anyone to be sick, but at the same time you cant feel bad if you dont want to follow safety precausions the cruise line has to avaiod illnesses. If I was your cabin steward I wouldnt jump for you either. Just the way you wrote the post you are a rotten person. You get a better response from people if you are kind.

Your shocked there is the fee for the doctor? Dont you have to pay for your doctor at home? Was she sea sick or just sick of hearing you complain about everything. What's funny is, everything you are complaining about is what to expect on a cruise. Not the illness part, but that does happen.

If she was sick from the vent, shame on YOU for not reporting the smell to housekeeping before she was sick. Your such a good guy, your gal is sick and you think of yourself and go get smashed. How we need more men like you.

Your wasted money and bad experience was due to you not doing your reseach and knowing what to expect on a cruise. Fortunatly for NCL, anyone that reads this will know that you complaints are a joke. You will do us all a great favor if you never cruise again.

Sorry for the lengthy post, I just want all first time cruisers to do research before booking and its not as bad as this man quoted.

Run, Don't Walk

OMG!

Are you kidding me?  As to the title of your diatribe, that's waaaay too much information.

Note to the fiancee:

Please do not marry this horrible man. Anyone who abuses service persons is the lowest form of bully.

Also, what kind of prospective husband won't spend $130 on the woman he loves for a doctor, and then blame a cruise line about how sick you were for weeks? A doctor who could have given you a shot or two of phenargan so you could have gotten instantly better and enjoyed your cruise.

What do you possibly have to look forward to? Pulling your own teeth? Horse linament for an a broken arm? For Gawd's sake, just give back the ring. You know it's a CZ.

And you, you cheap whiner. Do learn some manners. And one last thing. Washy washy washy washy washy washy. In your dreams.

Apparently you never learned...

NOT to insult people who serve your food or those you expect quality service from.

If I were you, I'd eat at home all the time. I can't imagine that any waiter/waitress/bartender who comes in contact with your snide remarks and rude behavior let's it just roll off their backs. Likewise bellmen or a cruise line room steward, hostess, service desk employee or just about anyone else who is NOT paid to accept abuse from you.

If you want good service, I suggest being polite.

You reserved & paid for a motel type (cheap) vacation, yet somehow expected a 5-Star Suite experience.

If I were your bride to be, I'd seriously re-consider allowing you to plan our future vacations or quite frankly make any decisions for us going forward. Also, please be aware that your lack of manners and smart-a$$ remarks may be mildly funny for a short time, but over the long term she will tire of them quickly. I'm not sure who you think you are impressing with your boorish behavior, but it's a very unbecoming trait to have.

When planning our first NCL cruise, I did what you seemed to skip over. Research.

Not knowing what to expect from a cruise, I turned to forums filled with people who had experience & suggestions. With their help, our cruise was a great experience and one that we will be sure to book again.

Was everything perfect? No, but I haven't been on a vacation yet where everything was.

With your attitude, I suggest staying home. Your fellow travelers will rejoice.

I think the problem is obvious...

AUTHOR: Madarabian - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, August 07, 2010

Respectfully, these types of frivolous complaints, especially when theyre made with such glaring grammatical and spelling errors, are becoming all too common on ripoffreports.com.  Thats a real shame, too.  Too many reports of such insignificant issues devalues legitimate complaints by people who actually need help.

I doubt seriously that too many waiters offering to bring you drinks, or an unsolicited hand sanitizing meets the criteria of a valid complaint.  I also noted that throughout your report at least the parts that werent illegible you bragged with vitriolic bravado about each of your sarcastic and sardonic comments made to staff members who probably deserved them the least.

Its bad enough to read your nearly illegible diatribe of nitpicky complaints and rude comments to staff and crew, but seeing how clever you thought you were by listing them destroyed any creditability your statement tries to make.  Just a few of the examples that come to mind are, Now agitated further I state if it is not on this tub someone will swim back to Boston for it, and,  the crew was sucking around waiting for a tip, so I tell him to look both ways before crossing the street, or, we avoided Mr washy washy  saying I would have more than likely washy washed him over the side rail in Massachusetts Bay, or even, I was not suffering from a hangover or he would have most assured had his spray bottle for breakfast.

Im sure that even you would agree that only an idiot alienates and insults people he expects to get help from, especially with such narcissistic gripes.  Truly, lets take a look at some of your so-called issues:

"We as most guests where informed our staterooms were not ready and we would have to wait. "

It's customary to have to wait several hours after boarding for your room to be ready, just as you have to wait for a hotel to have your room ready, except with a boat it's a lot more complicated.  On the day you boarded, a literal boat load of other passengers had just left the same ship.  The entire ship - not just the rooms - has to be cleaned and stocked.  Even the cleaning equipment needs to be restocked.  A boat is not a hotel.  It's a boat.  Garbage has to be taken out, food has to be brought in, people have to be checked in and brought on board, fuel has to be pumped, and of course luggage for 2500 people has to be brought onboard and distributed to the correct cabins.

"a crewman who was right behind us loudly speaking Washy Washy Happy Happy proceeds to douse our hands again w/o warning or request to do so."

Wait.  He was speaking this?  Like it was a language or something?  Or was he saying it?  It sounds like he was just letting people know that his job was to spray their hands.  This is a laughable complaint.  Your complaint is that he sprayed your hands without permission?  Was he a sanitizing bully?  Are you suggesting that this little crewmember chased you across the deck of the ship, tackled you, pinned you down, and sprayed your hands while laughing maniacally and shouting Washy- Washy, Happy-Happy?  Was scary music playing while all this was happening?  Sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel.

"Upon entering our stateroom we notice that our ocean view cabin was nothing more than a water line sealed Porthole."

Yes, that's exactly what an "ocean view cabin" is.  It's a room with a water line sealed porthole.  That's why "ocean view cabins" cost $699.00, and "Balcony Suites" costs $2,000.00.  A few minutes on the internet would have cleared that misunderstanding up.  Regrettably, you didn't do sufficient research before you purchased your ticket.  Not NCLs problem, YOUR problem.

"The bathroom floor was covered in a transparent sticky layers of soap scum build up where is the Clorox when you need it, also there was what could only be described at this point as A sickeningly strong odor of air deodorizing spray mixed with a musty odor coming from the ceiling mounted cabin fresh air/ac/ heat vent."

Just curious, but did you happen to be sick the day your teacher talked about periods and commas?  No matter, because the "soap scum" that you describe isn't soap at all.  Its called SALT.  Salt is found in large quantities in and around that large body of water called the ocean.  In tropical ports, where the temperature and humidity mix with the ocean, a salty film will develop on floors, glass, and windows.  Obviously, youve never been in the tropics before, or your experience with ships has been limited to tiny fishing boats outside Ogunquit.  It's not possible to keep those surfaces clean for very long for that reason, but it's harmless.  By the way, eliminating sea sickness from the list of possibilities of your girlfriends possible illnesses because she doesnt get sick on your little fishing boat is embarrassingly poor diagnostics.

As for the odor from the AC, that actually may have been a valid complaint, but your nitpicking pretty much neutralized any creditability you had in making it, and you probably blew any reasonable chance of a nice resolution with your snotty and sarcastic remarks to the staff and crew.  Perfect example below:

"Our luggage had not made it to the room as of yet I had called the information desk and was informed that our luggage would not arrive until about 6 pm. Now agitated further I state if it is not on this tub someone will swim back to Boston for it."

Youre pretty proud of that, arent you?  You put all of these little quips front and center throughout your report.  Your friends might be impressed with them, but Im sure that any sympathy the desk agent you complained to might have had vaporized after hearing it.  Especially since at that very moment, the crew was likely very busy delivering luggage to the other 2500 people on board.

Lets be real.  You spent $600.00 for your room, sarcastically chastised the desk agent, but now have an expectation that your luggage is going to be picked out and delivered out of order right away because Why?

Im thinking not.  Im thinking you got your luggage at the same time everyone else around you did.  Im  guessing that the people who paid $6000, $4000, or $2000 for their rooms probably got their luggage first.

"Even more agitated keeping in mind I had purchased our trip with a free upgrade making my way up to the lobby on deck 7 upon arrival I find a lobby full of and a long line of no doubt other agitated guests and of course by the time I got there a sign was up stating we are sorry there are no upgrades available."

Good God.  This paragraph is so badly written, I honestly cant tell if youre confused, or just making the whole thing up.  It doesnt really matter, because either way, you still dont have a valid complaint.

If you purchased the trip and got a free upgrade, then you must have upgraded from an inside room to your ocean view room.  No cruise line in the world is going to put you in your one room, wait until the boat starts moving, and then move you to the upgraded room unless you a) upgraded after you boarded, or b) there was a real problem with your room.   You wouldnt have to have gone downstairs to get an upgrade unless you were trying to upgrade again.  If that were the case, you had no more expectation of getting a free upgrade than anyone else in that line.  Not NCLs problem.  YOUR problem;

Just about then we hear a thump and open the door to find our luggage tossed off the cart in front of the door so we Drag it in and the crew was sucking around waiting for a tip. So I tell him to look both ways before crossing the street.

Gosh.  How cool you are.  Guess you told them.  Im sure that after yet another selection of your sarcasm repertoire, they just snapped to attention and made taking care of you a big priority.  You know, all of us love to be on the receiving end of sarcasm and rudeness.

Saying that you had to DRAG your luggage into your room is an interesting choice of words.  If you had to DRAG it rather than carry it, it sounds like you either had a lot of luggage, or your luggage was very, very heavy.  No wonder it thumped when it was removed from the rack.

I doubt that they threw it off the cart since you didnt see them do it. Youre also presumptuous in assuming they were waiting for a tip.  If they were behind, Im sure they were far more likely hurrying to get the luggage to the appropriate rooms to be worried about getting a tip from such a generous, valued guest like youve demonstrated yourself to be.  If they were hanging around, then your part of the ship was probably the last to get its luggage.  If you were in the cheap rooms, it most certainly was.

At our arrival on deck 12 we avoided Mr washy washy as I would have more than likely washy washed  him over the side rail in Massachusetts bay,

Ah, what wit.  You had just complained about just getting out of an elevator with people who were coughing and sneezing, yet you object AGAIN to having your hands sprayed.  You must be tortured by the cognitive dissonance caused by your own hypocrisy.   I think wed find a book about this particular narcissism in the psychology section at Amazons.  The abnormal psychology section.

force you onto paying for an equally unsatisfactory and over priced meal at one or more of the overrated  food vendors on board the Spirit,

Ive eaten on the Spirit, and the food in the specialty restaurants is excellent.   Im not sure where you ate, but the food in the buffets is always fresh, hot, plentiful, and varied.  If you chose to eat hot dogs, bagels, and cereal, thats your issue, not the quality or selection of available food.  And please, stop complaining about the price of soda.  You act like there was nothing else to drink on the boat that was free, and you were hijacked into buying soft drinks to wash down your hot dogs and cereal diet.  I drank coffee, tea, and water and never paid a dime for it.

I noticed that my gal was not looking to good no doubt due to the stale musty moldy air being pumped into our stateroom via an obviously poorly maintained fresh air system aboard the Spirit so I kept her out on deck for fresh air as long as I possibly could.

Ah, thanks for that expert medical diagnosis.  I certainly would agree with your previous statement that the problem wasnt sea sickness, as that usually starts immediately and goes away after a few days.  Given your reluctance to hygiene, I even wouldnt rule out that she may have picked up a bug.  However, blaming the problem on the ventilation system has about as much merit as the paranoid postings about food poisoning.  Heres the logic.  Pay attention.

1.     There is no such thing as an ISOLATED case of food poisoning on board a cruise ship.  If one person takes ill after eating a meal that was prepared by the crew members, and those crew members served 3000 meals under the same conditions, its not food poisoning.
2.    If your spouse/friend gets a rash, and you dont, its not bedbugs.
3.    If your ventilation system has a problem, everyones ventilation system on your deck has the same problem.  If they dont, you dont.

If I ate nothing but hotdogs, hamburgers, cereal, and soda for a week, Id be puking my guts out too.
I have hundreds of suggestions that would make your next cruise more enjoyable, but I really think that posting them would be a waste of time and energy.   I would suggest that the next time you go anywhere, even a cursory, perfunctory bit of research would better prepare you.  I would also suggest that  you stop taking such pride in creative rudeness with regard to your remarks to people and crew, and finally, that you get yourself a good book on English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and READ it.
