I purchased a Gateway laptop from Office Depot for a birthday present. Office depot offered $125.00 instant rebate and another $125.00 mail in rebate. I copied the receipt for myself and filled out the original receipt with my name and address, etc. and mailed it to the Office Depot specified on the receipt.

Well, in less than a week the laptop quit working, it wouldn't power on at all. I was under the assumption that I could return this non-working computer for an exchange, but that was not the case. First off, the store manager told me that because the receipt I had was a copy, (I sent in the original for a rebate) they couldn't help me (I can't believe it!) Second, there was not another laptop like the one I purchased so they couldn't exchange it. And they frankly told me to call Gateway, because they couldn't do anything to help me.

I can't believe that a company can stay in operation with these principles. Their customer service is the pitts! They only want your money and that's all. Please people, don't do business with this organization.

Return Policy

AUTHOR: Zack - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 03, 2009

Read the return policy on your receipt. It says that technology can only be returned with the original receipt. There's no argument here, if you can't meet the requirements of the return policy, they don't have to take the return.

Need the UPC

AUTHOR: Retailemployee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 02, 2009

1. If they had another of the same unit they could do a no receipt exchange for the computer which would not affect the rebate. and giving you a working laptop. but they would probably only give you what you give them, so keep the cut up box, and just try to exchange the laptop by itself, and be nice about it they will be more likely to help you. I admit I'm guilty of not helping customers that blew up in my face then turning around and resolving another customer with a similar problem just because they were not yelling at me, and were willing to be patient.

2. if you read the office depot rebates ALL of the say "the original or a copy of the receipt". So you should have just sent in a copy of the receipt.

3. If you want to return the laptop a big reason they will not return it without the upc is that if they send it back Damaged and Defective (D&D) to the manufacturer the store is out that money.

Scam that happens at my Office Depot

AUTHOR: Officedepotemp - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 05, 2009

People buy a item with a large rebate, send the rebate in and want to return the item. While in a month they get a 125 dollar rebate. The reason you could not return it was probably because it had no UPC code. We need that to process the rebate. We are not able to look up transactions from weeks ago in our computer system

RADIO SHACK RIPPED ME OFF ON A COMPUTER JUST LIKE THIS FOR $900!

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 31, 2008

WHOEVER WAS WORKING AT THIS OFFICE DEPOT STORE MUST HAVE BEEN TAKING LESSONS FROM THE GANGSTA RAO JIVE a*s THUGG THAT MANAGED THE RADIO SHACK STORE IN HIGHLAND MALL IN AUSTIN,TEXAS BACK IN 2004.

I HAD THAT COMPUTER LESS THAN FOUR HOURS ONCE I TOOK IT HOME AND TURNED IT ON AND IT DID NOT COME ON. SO I BUNDLED IT ALL UP AND TOOK IT BACK AND THE (EXPLETIVE DELETED) EMPLOYEES IGNORED ME AND THE MANAGER THREATENED TO GET THE MALL SECURITY AND A COP BECAUSE THEY SAID I DIDN'T BUY IT THERE.

IT WAS A COMPAQ LAPTOP COMPUTER WITH EVERYTHING ON IT!

I CALLED THE COMPANY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED ON THAT COMPUTER A YEAR AGO. WE ALSO MANAGED TO FIGURE OUT THAT THE POWER CORD AND THE CONVERTER THAT WENT WITH IT WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL POWER CORD AND THAT SOMEONE HAD APPARENTLY TRIED TO SEND A SURGE TO DELIBERATELY URN OUT THE GUTS OF THE COMPUTER POSSIBLY BECAUSE THEY WERE TRYING TO DESTROY PORNO ON THE HARD DRIVE.

SO I WENT TO SOME FRIENDS WHO ARE COMPUTER PROFESSIONALS AND THEY SAID THAT THE COMPUTER WAS NOT NEW BUT IT APPARENTLY HAD BEEN PRE-OWNED AND WASN'T EVEN THE TYPE NORMALLY SOLD BY RADIO SHACK. IT SEEMED TO THEM THAT THE MANAGER OR ONE OF HID FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS HAD BOUGHT THE COMPUTER SOMEWHERE ELSE BESIDES RADIO SHACK AND THAT THEY HAD EXCHANGED IT FOR A COMPUTER THAT RADIO SHACK SOLD AND I WAS THE LUCKY SUCKER WHO GOT RIPPED OFF!

MY FRIENDS TOLD ME THS SAME STORY THAT THE CUSTOMER HELP DESK AT COMPAQ HAD TOLD ME. THAT THIS WAS A BAD REPAIR JOB GONE WRONG. THE MOTHERBOARD WAS FRIED AND THERE JUST WASN'T VERY MUCH TO REPLACE OR WORK WITH. tHEY ALSO BELIEVED THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD BEEN LOOKING AT KID PORN OR SOMETHING. SO I HAD THEM CANNIBALIZE IT AND SELL THE PARTS AND TURN THE HARD DRIVE OVER TO INVESTIGATORS WHO COULD FIND OUT WHO HAD DOWNLOADED WHAT AND WHEN.

REGARDING THE RECEIPT.L I NOTICED THAT IT WAS OF A SORT OF INK THAT FADED VERY QUICKLY WHEN EXPOSED TO SUNLIGHT. APPARENTLY THE MANAGER CROOK HAD NOT MADE A COPY OF THE RECEIPT FOR THE STORE'S RECORDS AND WHEN ANOTHER EMPLOYEE CAME ON DUTY, I HAVE HIM CHECK AND THERE WAS NO RECORD THAT I HAD EVER BOUGHT THAT COMPUTER IN THEIR STORE. .

SO I GOT RIPPED OFF FOR A BAD COMPUTER THAT I REALLY DID PAY $900 FOR AND HAD NO WAY TO PROVE I EVEN BOUGHT IT AT RADIO SHACK. I TRIED CONTACTING RADIO SHACK BUT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT AND WHEN I GAVE THEM THAT SERIAL NUMBER OF THE COMPUTER, THEY HAD NEVER EVEN SOLD THAT KIND OF COMPUTER IN ANY OF THEIR STORES. THEY WERE OF ABSOLUTELY NO HELP.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO RIPPED OFF AT ANY STORE THAT SELLS COMPUTERS.

I WAS.

How to get a duplicate receipt from Office Depot

AUTHOR: Sally - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 30, 2008

I am having a similar problem with Office Depot. To get a copy of your reciept call 800-721-6592 and give them the store's id number, the date of purchase, the exact amount of the transaction, and your credit card number.....and they can send you a copy of your receipt. As long as it is issued by Office Depot, the manager should accept THAT sort of copy. From now on, I will always mail my large rebates by certified mail and request a signed return reciept. Although, I don't think I will be doing any business with Office Depot in the future.

Gee, Why Didn't I Think Of That?

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 08, 2008

I could buy a computer at office depot, send off for the $125 rebate and then return the computer one week later by saying it wasn't working. Just think, I could make myself an easy $125. I could go to every office depot in town. Oh wait, they won't let you return the computer without the original receipt and I have to send the original in with the rebate. Darn, there goes my plan.

They can look in there system to see your laptop sale

AUTHOR: Rob - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 08, 2008

To the former rebuttal your wrong. You have to send in the original for a rebate as for circuit city I use to work there they can look in there system and see your purchase, they can even get you a copy they should be able to exchange the laptop and remove the next rebate offer easily but I will tell you dont even expect to get your rebate. I worked for them and purchased a laptop 5 years ago and still havent got my rebate LOL. I called and they said they never recieved the form so I sent another and still havent recieved anything so dont hold your breath. Call corp and let them know whats going on I dont think this will help but try Circuit city is in trouble and dont want to admit it also there extended warrenty is a big big scam and I think it has caught up with them.We were pressured into selling them or loosing our job so I eventually QUIT Good luck

Interesting ...

Why should the store "refund or exchange" your laptop when:

1- You do not have the original receipt -- just a copy which would be very easy to alter.

2- You've already mailed off requests for several hundred dollars worth of rebates.

Sounds like you're trying to make a few bucks at the store's expense.
