I bought a cardone brand water pump for my S-10 chevy from Murrays auto parts. After bolting the pump onto the engine I began to muscle the heater hose onto the heater outlet tube extending from the body of the pump. As I did that, the tube suddenly became loose from the pump body so I inspected it to find out what happened.
Now the heater hose tube is supposed to be tightly attached to the pump by way of friction fit I.E. tightly pressed into the pump permanently. All this cardone pump had was a dab of adhesive holding it on and when I began to muscle on the flexible heater hose, the adhesive cracked and revealed a very loosely attached tube.
Thankfully I caught it since if it became detached afterwards while I was driving, my engine would have lost all the coolant almost immediately and I might have ended up with a burned up engine. What angers me is that the adhesive on the tube indicates to me that cardone knew the pump was defectively made and instead of rejecting it in production, simply glued in a tube and sent it out to a trusting public.
Stay away from cardone brand auto parts.

This company really has poor quality materials and products. I have a '91 S-10 Blazer 4x4 and bought a water pump by A-1 Cardone. It broke LESS than ONE month after I bought it. Except the Author in this post was much luckier than I. The pump I purchased broke in the middle of the shaft. Well, the fan is directly connected to the pump and separated from the engine, slamming into the radiator... So, a $20 defective pump damaged my fan, fan clutch, belt, radiator, top and bottom fan shrouds, and a hose... Costing me a grand total of $385 to fix and replace the parts (out of my own pocket). Yeah, I have a claim placed through the district manager of the store I bought it from but I don't see any money coming my way anytime soon!!! Thanks Cardone for ripping off me and others here... It only makes us stronger and to steer clear of your products!

Trying to File a Labor Claim

When a labor claim is eventually received in Cardone, there is a process in place which indicates a 10 working day turn-a-round time which includes the analysis of the unit. Any credits due are sent to the warehouse.
It is up to each warehouse to contact and distribute any credits to the individual stores. Cardone can not dictate to the warehouse how they contact and distribute any credits.

On all pressed in style pipes, the anerobic adhesive is just added strength. The proper pressfit dimensions are critical in order to retain the pipe in the casting. This is an unfortunate circumstance you have endured and we are sorry for your inconvenience. We take the quality of our products as well as customer input very serious.
In order for us to sustain high quality standards, we welcome input and would like any questionable units returned for a Quality Engineering lab analysis or a Labor Claim. I believe the part # in question is a 55-11311 which has an extremely low warranty return.

Try filing a labor claim

Okay, then you might try to have a labor claim, through the parts store, towards Cardone. Most parts stores will give you a free replacement for the antifreeze that you may have lost. Maybe even some more gasket sealer.
The bad thing about filing a labor claim is the time wait. It may take 6 to 8 weeks to get a response from Cardone. They have the final say so on if it is a manufacturing defect or not. Usually a labor refund is only given if you paid a licensed mechanic to do it. A shop bill would be turned in along with the part. Still might be able to be reimbursed for you time... Good luck.

This was a NEW cardone water pump

I agree that folks should only use new manufactured items when replacing something. This was a new pump. I can give you the part number off the recipt from cardone. It was B55-11331 new water pump $ 54.99 at murrays. I don't grease the flexible hose when installing it but I wet it down with coolant both as a lubricant and to form a good seal. I use the term muscle only because as you know hoses are slightly undersized to the tube they go over and it takes a little force to achieve installation. Out of curiousity, I attempted to remove the tube from the old pump to see the difference.
No way could you hand remove it from the pump housing. It required the use of a hammer and chisel just to move it a little out of the pump body. The cardone one, once I broke the adhesive, was so loose it nearly fell out on its own. Clearly, the drilled hole was made to large for the tube and should have been rejected before shipping it out.

#1 Consumer Suggestion
Only install new water pumps

I do not know of any A1 Cardone parts that are made new. All are rebuilt. When a water pump is rebuilt only a new bearing and seal are pressed in. The pump is cleaned and a new gasket is put in the box. You have to turn in your old one for the core charge. A1 Cardone, will rebuild your old one for resale.
Most Chevy water pumps have a screwed in heater hose connection. Some do have a pressed fit connection. You wrote that you had to muscle it in. That is most likely why it broke lose. If you use a radiator hose grease, it will make the job easier. The grease allows the hose to go on easier as well as helping to make a better water seal.
Especially with the difficulty of putting water pumps on newer vehicles, most installers and mechanics will only put on new water pumps. With many cars today, you may have to remove the radiator, shroud, other bolt on parts, fan clutches, and/or even timing belts. It can be a very expensive redo.
Even with a new pump, the hose tube could break lose if it is over muscled. On a rebuilt pump, the tube is not removed and then resealed back into place. It is only removed if it needs to be replaced because of visible damage. Fortunately, you saw the problem. Had you not noticed it and started driving, you most likely would have seen the steam coming from under the hood. That and the temp gauge would have given you notice before any damage was done to the motor.
Glad things did work out though. Did you put another rebuilt pump on or did you go with a new one? Even though new pumps will also fail, the 25% to 35% that you might save on a rebuilt pump, does not cover the reliability and peace of mind that you get with a new pump. Good luck.
