I have been living at my current residency since Sep. 2009. I had roomates up untill last year when they broke lease and moved out a month early. They have not lived at this address for 7 months now.

Consumers energy, soon after my roomates moving out, sent me a notice stating that they will be adding about 1000$ to my bill, from my ex-roomates old residency that I nor my wife have ever lived at. We contacted consumers in an attempt to get this resolved.

They asked for proof that he no longer lives here as they claimed to have problems with people trying to scam them, understandable. We however did not believe that it was legal for them to add this amount to our bill so we did not send a new lease as we did not have one.

Eventually they add the amount to our bill, WOW. Baffled that it was even legal that they were allowed to do this, which they are not (R 460.120 Payment of bill., which states:

(2) A utility shall not attempt to recover from any customer any outstanding bills or other charges due upon the account of any other person, unless that customer has entered into a lawful guarantee under R 460.112, or another lawful agreement to pay those bills and charges.)

We have since sent them a copy of a new lease that we asked our landlord for. They have still not taken the amount off and now have sent a shutoff notice today for tomorrow, which is also illegal since you are required by law to send the notice 10 days prior to shutoff.

I personally would love to see a class action lawsuit begin against them. I have been looking around online and there have been plenty of cases where they are breaking the law.
