Ugly Duckling aka Drive Time (same company, different name) over-charges 25%-40% for their cars and on top of that charges people 29% interest. They don't acknowledge the Kelly Blue Book at all, saying that they are charging people to "help rebuild their credit".

I had a major engine problem with my car about 6 months after I bought it that cost me a total of $2900 in repairs and car rental charges, and during the entire ordeal they were calling me to make sure my payment was coming in.

If you're late, they charge you late fees, which is understandable, but they also take some of the money from your principle, which unknown to the buyer, is added on at the end of the contract. So when you pay off your car (or think you have), you find out you still owe money on the principle, even though they charged you late fees.
They tell you they will give you a credit card if you make your first 6 months' payments on time, and they don't.

If you have poor credit like I did, PLEASE find a more reputable dealer to buy a car from. You will regret for a VERY long time ever buying a car from this armpit of a place.

Drive Time overcharges

AUTHOR: Rob - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 20, 2003

It is perfectly legal to "overcharge" for a vehicle. Assuming you are an adult, it is assumed you know how to negotiate. If the price requested is too much, go elsewhere. The same with interest rates. Someone wants to charge you 29%, go elsewhere.

The reality is, if you have rotten credit and little money down, only places like this will do business with you. However, if you have a hefty downpayment go to the largest new car dealer you can find who has access to hundreds of sources for financing. They want to make money selling cars, not on late fees.

As far as the car breaking down, you didn't have a mechanic check it out when you bought it (or even shortly after)? Buyers have responsabilities too.
