This is concerning a 2004 Ford F150, at 90,000 miles. I went to change the spark plugs to keep up with my vehicle Maintenance and notice that one of the spark plugs sleeve had fallen off and was stuck inside the cylinder head, I then moved forward with another spark plug to see if I would have any luck and it was even worse all that was left when it came out was a thin wire the rest was stuck inside I didn't even hear this thing snap or break! I had just purchased this vehicle not even a month ago! I have researched online now and see that it is happening to all Fords 2004 and newer buyer beware! I will now have to pay out of pocket to have it towed, missing work in the process and I don't know how much it will cost other than what I have researched which the lowest amount being at $1100.00, Which is not a low price, when this is a defect in the vehicle. Ford has to fix this recall these vehicles. buy Ford again NO WAY!

I feel for your situation ,but at the same time I want to let you know how lucky you are to be alive. I lost everything my son his girlfriend and the car. And Ford denies any fault in my son's death. even though they recalled my car 8 months after Payton burned alive. Ford Hired attorney's to pay off the passengers family and dis-credit me and a expert witness that I have never met and have sanctions on me of 117,000 and now are threatening to take my son's home. Sue them and they sue you back. Ford Motor Company doesn't take responsibility and records NO DEATHS due to the 17.mil vehicle recall of the Speed deactivation control switch defect.

RIP PAYTON TYLER LEWIS 1984-2006 DIED OVER A $21.00 switch

Our family is destroyed and we will never be the same

Why didn't Ford recall all the vehicles with this defective part?

As to not scare off the consumer. Never mind if you kill them.

2004 F150 Plug Issues

AUTHOR: Denise - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, November 28, 2010

To Steve Bradenton (U.S.A)

The spark plug found in the 2004 F150 5.4L was a Motorcraft plug which is a plug used by Ford.  I will take your advice and make contact with the supplier, as well as for consumers out there please take these into consideration I have learned by doing my research online that Champion also makes a type of Sparkplug to help avoid this nightmare. There are tools out now that have been made because of this sparkplug issue actually one created by Ford which is called the Rotunda 303-1203 and another version the Lisle 65600 both will run up to 100.00 each.

I agree the spark plug should have been changed at the 60,000 mile mark, and it is true that all vehicles that were created 2004 and to 2008 with that model engine have this spark plug issue, consumers do your research before purchasing your vehicle and learn of its flaws. My problem is with Ford they made the mistake by the design created on this vehicle, and now it is my money I will have to pay to have a reliable vehicle until the next maintenance call for sparkplugs.  Now as for online research you sound as if you have never used the web to research anything or buy anything at that, but here you are researching under rip-off report or do you actually work for the company???

As well as to use the word stupid this is a strong word and if I were you Id be careful. I do plan to take my vehicle in to a pro and I will report how they treat me as well as the amount out of pocket so you will hear from me very soon. Again very bold to blame me, for it was Ford to agree to a bad idea a bad design, thank goodness for tools that have been created and as well as plugs to help avoid this out of pocket cost from happening again.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

I suggest a tighter grip on reality here. Common sense.

There are several things you need to understand here.

The first being that this is a spark plug defect issue. FORD does NOT make spark plugs. Your issue is with the manufacturer of the spark plug, and POSSIBLY whomever installed it.

Also keep in mind that the vehicle you JUST purchased was actually manufactered sometime in 2003, so it is over 7 years old. It is NOT a new vehicle, especially with 90,000 miles on it as you claim, that spark plug SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED at least once since FORD installed the ORIGINAL spark plug at the factory.

On most FORD vehicles over the past 10 years or so, the first major scheduled maintenence is done at 60,000 miles which includes the changing of the spark plugs.

You problem here OBVIOUSLY is NOT with Ford, it is with the last moron that changed the spark plugs on that vehicle. Probably some marginally skilled or educated shadetree mechanic that overtightened the plugs and possibly cracked one or more of them at time of install.

You REALLY need to find out who installed those spark plugs, or whomever owned that vehicle and never bothered with the 60,000 mile scheduled maintenence.

Your problem is NOT with Ford. Guaranteed.

Lack of maintenence and/or improper maintenence is the problem here.

FYI...there is NO WAY you can "research" prices to correct this problem. That is just plain stupid. $1100? Please! You are looking at 2-3 hours max to remove a broken spark plug in most cases. Even if the shop labor was $90 an hour, that's $270 in labor plus the cost of the new plugs. Even if you did them all I couldn't see a bill over $600-$700 MAX. Unless you ran the engine for a long time with the broken plugs.

Ever heard of a drill bit and an easy out? Just don't go all the way through and get shavings down in the cylinder. Spray it good with penetrating oil first around the threads and let it set overnight.

It appears to me that you didn't know which way was loose and which was tight and accidentally tightened the plug instead of loosening it and broke it yourself, and now want someone to blame.

I have had numerous Ford products and have never had this problem.
