We originally purchased a time share from the Mayan Palace for a very reasonable price. The properties are gorgeous and a fantastic place to vacation. The following year we upgraded to the Grand Mayan because we really liked the timeshare. The following year we decided to vacation at the Grand Mayan at Playa del Carmen and all the trouble began. We went to an owner's update which lasted over 4 hours! The sales people would not let us leave despite the fact that we said we didn't want to upgrade to the Grand Luxxe. The sales man was named Arsen. He kept trying to pursue us to upgrade despite the many times we told him we didn't want to. Finally they sent a woman to speak with us who told us for $10.000 they would reserve the upgrade price for a year and they would purchase a membership for us in one of the Mexican real estate agencies that they guaranteed would rent our weeks for us to help offset the $10.000 fee. To get out of the sales center and Because we thought they were being honest, we agreed. We paid the $10.000 fee for upgrade to the Grand Luxxe and joined the agency. To this day-which has been almost 5 years, we have deposited over 10 weeks with this Agency -Alliance- and they have never rented a week. Or at least that is what we have been told. We have never received any money from Alliance. Additionally the Grand Mayan has said they are not affiliated with Alliance so they can't do anything about it. As a result we have never been back to the Mayan properties. We have declared that if we ever go again we will sit by the pool and advise everyone who will listen to NOT purchase timeshares from the Grand Mayan. In fact if you want to vacation there I will gI've you my weeks at the reservation price so that they never make money off of another couple like they did off of us. We are $46000 in debt on this property that completely lied to us. Had they upgraded us to the Grand Luxxe for the money we have already paid to compensate for the sales lies they told us during our 4 hour captivity in Playa Del Carmen we would have been happy. But they refuse to resolve the situation. To cap everything off, Alliance contacted us recently asking for more money to retain our membership in their company. When I told the rep that I was still waiting to see the revenue from the 10 weeks already deposited, he had no response. The Grand Mayan is a terrible company that takes advantage of foreign visitors by misleading promises and subterfuge. Avoid at all costs.

It is always best to hire someone skilled to do so, unfortunately in most cases these companies dedicated to cancel timeshares usually cheat for the second time to their customers since they are vulnerable and desperate. If you are thinking of hiring them you just have to make sure you do not have to make any payment upfront ... I found these articles that speak precisely about this, you should read them, that might help you to resolve many doubts:

Mayan Palace Timeshare Scam

Most of the scams being committed by Mayan Palace is that they don’t let their buyers know they have a 5 days cooling period if they wish to cancel; instead, they repeatedly tell they buyers once the contract is being sign there is no cancellation period. Mayan Palace sales representative also offers a trade-In, letting the buyer believe that Mayan Palace is going to take their other timeshare and sell them for them and deducting the cost of their new timeshare with Mayan Palace, but at the end you end up owning two timeshares and payments due for Mayan Palace turning it into in a double Mayan Palace timeshare Scam.
