On July 3rd of 06 we decided to purchase a new t.v. Being a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" we opted to spend more, $1800 to be exact, on a LG t.v., model 37LC2D.............. boy, were we wrong. Our t.v. died after 5 1/2 years. I called our cable carrier thinking that possibly there was a problem on their end and they conducted tests on 3 different occasions and everything was fine. The problem is the television itself. When I called the customer service department for LG, they said there is nothing they could do and the representative actually had the gall, in his smug voice, tell me that sometimes this "happens" to luxury items.
I couldn't believe his attitude. A customer spends a lot of money thinking they are getting a quality item and 5yrs. down the road the item dies and he tells me" this happens".............................no it shouldn't happen but if it does, a decent corporation would surely try to make things right. I would NEVER buy or recommend any LG product to anyone................. there are so many other quality brands for a lot less money, and longer life spans. No need to ever purchase any item from LG.

I didn't mention any price, just the fact that Vizio is ( and was) half the price of LG. I'm just saying that I can buy 2 Vizio LCD TV's for the price of 1 LG LCD, when one burnt out, plug in the other.

Considering the average lifespan of an LCD television is 60,000 hours, you were robbed. If you left it on 24 hours a day, that's 7 years. You convinced me to stay away from LG. It sounds as if their product & customer service need some improvment. I'll be buying another Vizio, they're at least half the price & last at least as long as yours. Thank you."
A warranty is for a fixed period of time and provides a remedy for manufacturing problems DURING THAT time.
A mfr can't be expected to extend the warranty to what each customer thinks they should. If so, what's the use of having warranty terms?
Due to having to provide unlimited warranty repair/replacement, the mfr's would soon be out of business.
I, too, have several Vizio's and am happy with them.
As I've said before, I also have a 36" Sharp LCd that's over 5 years old and is getting a dark shadow along the left side of the picture.
The warranty was one year and, no, I don't intend to hound Sharp to repair or replace it.
Your comment about the comparative pricing is not valid...the OP bought his set almost 6 years ago and that's about the average price of that size set then. It's MUCH less now for ALL brands.

TVs have never been known for reliability

Seems to me going all the way back to my own childhood in early 60s that televisions in general have never been reliable. Of all the myriad televisions owned by my immediate family, from different brands ranging from Hotpoint, Zenith, Sony, Hitachi, GE, Toshiba, Sharp, Sanyo, Mitsubishi, RCA and now Vizio, the only ones lasting a decent amount of time before disintegrating were an early 1970s Sony, mid 1970s Sharp and our non LCD RCA and LCD Sanyo from a few years back. I'm hopeful the Vizio will prove a winner too. At least the newest flat panel TVs are much lighter and footprint friendly, allowing for easier disposal when they die. The Zenith from the 60s was a monster, always giving us shocks. We had to cover all the dials with tape. The Hotpoint died in the middle of JFKs funeral, all of maybe 4 years old. The GE spent 3 YEARS in a repair shop, like a delinquent in a reformatory. We let it stay there hoping to get it into the Guiness book of records as the worst TV ever made. Little did we know it would have lost its place 2 decades later, as the wonderful Sharp from the 70s was followed by another Sharp, possibly thee worst TV ever created. I actually had to put a BRACE on the tuner to keep the channels from shifting.
So why does anyone expect newer fragile technology like LCD or plasma to last any longer?
Because they've been more expensive?
Nobody should buy expensive toys if they can't afford to replace them after the warranty ends. Get a 26 or 32 inch for under $300 if you can't afford to replace a new 40 in 2 years.

I'm not a retailer in the electronics industry, so that model means absolutely nothing to me. I would never assume what a model number stands for, Nor would I care.
I prefer complete and accurate communications.It's much simpler to just make a complete and accurate report.
The OP should have just stated that it was an LCD, or a Plasma, etc.(The OP is obviously clueless, and doesn't even know the difference, that was my point).

How many $188 Black Friday 32 inch Emerson (Funai) LCD TVs does anything think will still be alive in 5 years? The good news to the OP here is: a new equivalent to your 37 incher, figure most likely a 40 inch, will likely only run you about $400.

I just love these people who think that more expensive automatically means better!
One of my best friends out here has been a multi brand factory authorized service technician over the better part of the last 30 years, and does primarily warranty work.
Guess what?
According to this multi brand, factory authorized service technician with 30 years experience, the all around best deal, and easiest and cheapest set to fix is VIZIO! A Wal-Mart brand!
He says Sony is VERY good, but often very difficult to fix.
He says Vizio rarely breaks, and when it does, it is only 1 of 3 parts that need to be changed. That's it. Just 3 major components in the whole set that can be changed. And, they are easy to work on.
I wish I had known this before I bought my Philips 47" LCD. He tells me that set is a nightmare to work on and is plagued with problems.
Now, to the OP that expects a free repair on a 5.5 year old TV, you need a serious reality check! And, you never said if it was a Plasma or an LCD set, which is very important information that was left out.
The reason being is that most Plasma sets are designed to last only 3 years.
I bet the sales rep never tells any prospective buyer about that!
Right?

Back when they bought their set, about 2006 that wasn't an exorbitant price. Also LG has proven to be one of the more reliable sets per Consumer Reports.

Funny you should mention Samsung. Just about all of their TVs built between 2006 and 2010 had substandard capacitors in their power supplies. The TVs would experience start up issues after about 2 yrs. Samsung pretty much ignored the complainers for years and didn't seem interested in addressing the issue until last year. Most people who bought those TVs were out of luck. Plug the words Samsung and Capacitor into a search engine for an eye opening surprise.
I used to be a big fan of Samsung until I had to help more than half a dozen friends and family replace their oozing capacitors.
As to the OP's complaint, five and a half years is pretty good for a flat screen TV of that vintage. Unlike the old CRT TVs which contained technology that had matured for decades, the flat screens rarely achieve the same levels of longevity. I'm actually kind of surprised that my 4 1/2 yr. old 37" Visio is still working. My brother's 5 yr. old Sony has recently began to experience startup problems and will probably be dead in a few months. Not a big surprise.

Since WHEN has LG ( Lucky Goldstar - yes, that's what LG stands for. Remember Goldstar, the company that made all of those trashy discount store products that died the day after the warranty expired, a few years back ) ever made a "Luxury" item ??? LG is not, nor has it ever been a top tier manufacturer. And, as you have found out, their customer service is useless. It certainly pays to do the proper research BEFORE you buy.
Yes, you paid WAAAYYYY too much for that TV and, of course, did not get your money's worth. LG has discovered that if they advertise enough, and lie enough, people will not only buy their inferior products, but will pay exorbitant prices for them.
As you stated, there are MUCH better brands from which to choose. When shopping for HDTVs, just be sure to stick with the top manufacturers, such as Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. Remember, high prices are not a guarantee of high performance and reliability. And, of course, never believe a word that the salesman tells you. Most electronics sales people don't have a clue about the items they are selling, as more often than not, they are only told to "push" a certain high profit brand or item. You have certainly learned a lesson, unfortunately at a dear cost.

How long was the warranty?
I'll bet you think it should be for as long as you own the TV.
A warranty offers a manufacturers promise to fix/replace the set within the warranty terms for a fixed period of time...usually a year. After that, it's pretty much YOUR responsibility.
If that's NOT satisfactory, you should have purchased an extended warranty...doubt that would have done much good though, most people don't buy a warranty for 5 or more years.
My 5 year old 37" Sharp Aquos that cost about $1700 when I bought it, is getting a shadow on the left side of the screen. Guess I'll see if Sharp will "make things right." NOT! It had a ONE YEAR warranty.
BTW, where did you get the information that the other brands have longer life spans? Is this just a guess or did you do valid research? Which ones did you find were more reliable? I'm going to need a new one soon.
If you've read Ripoff Reports in the past, people have posted here on just about every brand out there and how much better some "other" brand is.
Also, of course ALL brands now sell for less money. The size sets you and I bought for $1700-$1800 now sell for $500-$600 and the new ones are generally better.
And no, MY voice in this isn't smug. Use hyperbole much?
