On 3/20/2014 I purchased a pair of 1ctw diamond earring. The earrings were originally $1400 but we're on special for $600 so I jumped on it. Two years later today 7/14/2016 I take the earrings to be appraised and come to find out they are only worth $50 and that is because of the 14k white gold setting. The diamonds themselves are worthless. So I immediately call Macy's customer service, lucky for me I save all my receipts on big purchases so I have my receipt and original tags. Customer service tells me to take them into the store I purchased them at, so I do. When I get there one of the associates test the stone and the tester is saying its a moissanite, but the associate tells me not to worry because one of the girls there has real diamond ring and the tester always says that. Okay!!! So then a senior associate comes and I explain the situation to her. She then uses the same tester the other associate used and got the same reading. I informed her of what the other associate had told me about the tester and she didn't say anything. Now during the whole time I am speaking to her she is a bit standoffish and rude. So then she try's to imply that I am somehow trying to defraud them and says she can't help me and the manager is busy. I insist I want to speak to a manager inform her I will wait as long as I must. At that point she then goes to get her manager. When she returns she informs me that the manager will be with me shortly.

In the meantime she and the other associates retest the stone and it comes back positive as a diamond. At this time the manager showas up and starts to tell me how when I purchased the diamonds they tested positive and now they don't so she can't help me at this point the associate chimes in and tells her that they tested positive and are in fact diamonds. As i explain to the manager about what happened when I tried to get them valued she goes on and on about all the factors that contribute to the value of a stone and so forth. I then inform her I understand exactly what she is telling me but the earrings I paid $650 for and they originally valued at $1400 are nowhere near worth that amount and I as a consumer have been ripped off. We argue back and forth about the earrings finally she asked what I want, a refund or another pair. I then inform her I want a refund as I could not trust the product they would replace them with.

So after talking back and forth she then says I would need an appraisal form as they could not trust my word as too what I told them. I agree to get the appraisal paper with the understanding that when I get this form I would be refunded, she then informs me at that point she would talk to her corporate office to see what could be done. When I leave the store I call every diamond appraiser in town and was told the cost would be $150. But a couple of the stores could look at the earrings and give me estimates on their value so I take them in. Lo and behold after examining the stones under a lens weighing them, measuring and testing them I was told the same thing as before the earrings are worth $50. So I call customer service again to see if I would be reimbursed for the appraisal cost and was given the number to the Tucson corporate office. I called and spoke to one of the employees explained the situation and the reason for my call. She told me she would look into the matter and call me back. When I recieved the return call it was from the original manager I had spoken too in the first place and she agreed to give me a full refund for the purchase amount. Long story short do not trust Macy's fine jewelry department, I still might never know that I'd bought a worthless pair of $650 diamonds.
