I I went to the ups store in Burke, virginia to ship my fiance who is in Netherlands something for the first time and am still paying for it. It is my first time shipping something over seas and they charged me 250 dollars which i thought was pretty reasonable.
Until my fiancé calls me and tells me that the courier called her and said that she needs to pay 650 euros (close to 800 US dollars) to get the package or it will be abandoned or shipped back to me and I would have to pay for it if I want it back.
I went back to the store and found the rude old lady who after I explained about how distraught I was said with no remorse or apology for notifying about the taxes that my fiancé would have to pay "WE JUST SHIP THE PACKAGE THERES NOTHING WE CAN DO AND IT'S NOT OUR JOB TO KNOW THAT INFORMATION IT'S YOUR JOB TO KNOW IT BEFORE YOU SHIP SOMETHING."
I don't know what to do anymore since I don't have the 800 dollars to pay for the taxes. If I could I wouldve bought a ticket and took the package myself and saw my fiancé as well.

Thank you so much for your comments about the service you were provided. When you shipped your package, you were informed that duties and taxes would likely be charged prior to your package being released to the consignee inThe Netherlands. Unfortunately, as you have been told, UPS and the UPS store have no control over the amount of duties and taxes that the receiving country will charge. you were well aware of this possibility prior to shipping your $3000 package. Perhaps you should have done your research in advance. It was your choice to ship this package. UPS and my staff did our job correctly and I will not apologize for the high quality of service you received as you were advised of the likelihood of the customs fees. If it makes you feel better to call people names and insult them because of any frustration you feel then go ahead. I just hope your supervisor and customers at the Burke at@t store are not targets as well. Best of luck to you in your engagement and thanks again for using The UPS Store.

If I could I wouldve bought a ticket and took the package myself and saw my fiancé as well.
- But if there was a tarrif impossed on the item you were bringing him, when you arrived in the Netherlands their Customs Agent would have informed you that you needed to pay the 650 Euro or you would not even get it back. Of course you could have just "forgot" to declare this item. Then your only issue would have been if they caught you. Where you then would need to come up with a few thousand Euro in penalties and fines.
They are correct. You can not expect UPS or any shipping company to know the tarrif regulations for every country. Especially when they may or may not know exactly what is in the package. Oh and this goes for other things as well. For example, if you happen to book an airline ticket. It is not up to the airline to make sure you have the proper documents, such as a passport or visa(if needed). So if you again showed up in the Netherlands and didn't have the proper paperwork, it is not the airlines fault..it is yours.
So not sure exactly what you wanted the UPS store to do? I guess if they said it with a smile you would have been happy. Perhaps you are trying to say that they should pay the taxes for you because you didn't know? I guess they could have said that there were possible taxes, of course if you still said still ship it and found out it was a lot I guess you would then complain that they didn't tell you the exact amount.
As for your analogy...UPS is NOT charging you these additional fees or taxes..the Government of the Netherlands are. UPS is not making a dime off of it, and probably loosing money because it costs them time/labor to actually get the money to the Government.

You have way too much time on your hands to respond to "boohoo" cry for help because I didn't know that there are any tariff or fees but all I'm saying is that could've advised me that there will be any at all. Not just like here pay this 250 and don't worry about the rest don't be a bit ch to random people that you don't know or how they feel about being ripped off, I work hard everyday for my money and someone providing a shipping service and not telling about any other fees or charges are the same as you going to go buy a sandwich and not know after eating a sandwich that there is a eating charge for it don't be an asshoe that no one like AND DON'T REPLY TO THIS REPORT if you nothing helpful to say cuz no one cares about you repeating something I was already told by the rude old woman who sounds alot like you .

While Im sure it makes YOU feel better to blame someone else for YOUR problem, the reality is the "old lady" was correct. It IS NOT their job to know each countries TARRIFFS!!!! When you ship internationally YOU are responsible for ANY tariffs or fees incurred. Now if the "old lady" didn't know how to ship in the US I would be worried. This IS a failure on YOUR part for NOT doing any research. YOU have web access, enough so that YOU can put a FAKE report up to make yourself feel better. YOU couldn't take 5 mins out of your oh so precious time and research?? Sorry, but THIS IS ON YOU!!!! UPS is a shipping company and they did their job, THEY shipped your package to where YOU wanted it to go. Unfortunatly you did not pay any applicable taxes and fees incurred during the shipping process and it IS NOT UPSs responsibility to do so. YOU can STOP playing the victim, because YOU victimized YOURSELF!!! Nothing more!!! It amazes me how quickly people like yourself try and find SOMEONE ELSE to blame for the mistakes YOU make. Its kind of disturbing that YOU will not even take responsibility for the mistakes YOU make. YOU must have been one of those "Timeout" kids. You know those self entitled and spoiled little brats. The ones who cant even be bothered to fess up when they are caught. THAT is what YOU sound like. BOOHOO!!!! I made a mistake and cant afford it so Im going to blame THEM because THEY didn't tell me. Did you EVER stop and think that its just NOT THEIR JOB?!?!?! THEIR job is to ship said package from point A to point B, THEY cannot help it if a corrupt shipping clerk in another country is trying to pad THEIR pockets and to blame THEM for the actions of someone else is the pinnacle of stupid and self entitled.
