I attempted to return a laptop I had received as a gift with no receipt to upgrade to a better processor (approx $100 more); the box was factory sealed (never opened) and I had waybill from HP to Walmart on box. They refused to facilitate return - I had an overall bad experience. Beware of purchasing electronics from Walmart as they give you a hard time. And there's no one that you can even reason with - they have very young employees with little customer service sense and

no business acumen (even the managers). I have sent them a complaint and awaiting a response. Ended up getting receipt from gift giver (very embarasing for me!) and exchanging laptop. I've learned my lesson though, low prices comes at a high price to your dignity! Next time, I will support establishments that value their clients.

Company policy

AUTHOR: Aaron - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 15, 2011

This is company policy and a good one.  They need receipts for electronics so people do not steal them and return them.  With a high priced item like this if you planned to exchange it you should have asked for the receipt from the person who gave the gift.  It's likely you have a close relationship to them after all.  And  don't see how it is embarrassing to thank them for the gift and tell them you want a laptop that is a bit faster and ask if you can have the receipt to exchange it.

Second I would like to comment on the employees at Wal-Mart.  From a retail management stand point Wal-Mart experience is seen as the best.  I have managed many places and I can tell you that Wal-Mart teaches their floor employees more about retailing than many other companies teach their managers.  I have only work for one company that I can say trained better and that was American TV(of Madison).  While no company with their number of employees will ever get all good employees I can say that most of the time Wal-Mart has fairly good employees for that pay/position level of retail.  As for the managers remember it is their job to protect the company and to help with customer complaints.  Abuses of the old Wal-Mart open arms return policy is what lead to this issue.  While many of us have been caught up in these rules(I tried to return some webcams and forgot the receipt) I think we all understand why they are there.  Theft and false returns make us all pay more.  Given the things I saw Wal-Mart take back in the 90's I am glad they have changed.

Good policy

When you supplied the receipt, Walmart gave you the exchange. Good policy. Not a rip off.

What is the ripoff?

From your description it sounds as if WalMart stuck to their posted return policy. How exactly were you ripped off?
