I purchased two DS Lites at Walmart for $98/each and purchased a 1-yr product replacement plan ($5.88/ea) from the Walmart clerk.  The clerk said "everything is covered" which I believed until I tried to use the "coverage" when they said that I needed to contact the manufacturer (Ninendo) because it was no longer under warranty.  Ninendo said that the item was not covered but would be willing to take another $60 + shipping to refurbish the unit and they told me the warranty was not longer active and I should contact Walmart for further assistance.  I then returned a call to Walmart Product Replacement Plan (run by AIG -- forshadowing).  THe Walmart/AIG representative then said that this was not a "Manufacturing defect." I would agree to that, but plan (nor the Walmart representative) does not present this as a extended manufacturer defect insurance plan.  If that were the case, I would not have purchased the insurance at all.... At a minimum this seems to be HIGHLY deceptive sales practices.  Oh, by the (((competitor's name redacted))) would have replaced the product.  The plan I purchased was TOTALLY worthless and refused to deal with Walmart again to buy electronics.

Facts

Take this info to the bank:

1-yr "replacement plan" is a year 2 warranty (if mfr warranty is 1 yr). Your plan administrator is not AIG - they just do some of the underwriting. The company is called "N.E.W."Ok, shop atTarget. Funny thing is, they also do Target's plan, yet Target calls it a "2-yr replacement - it ONLY replaces for the same reasons in year 2! At least Wal-mart is not "masking" year 1. They have nothing to do with the mfr warranty - think about it - why would they? In year two, you are covered for functional failure, not damage.

As for the bicycle, your "replacement" plan is also for year 2. There's no repair and covers all functional failure, not damage. It's very curious why these plans are offered at all on bikes. they are not maintenance plans. Brake failure in year two? C'mon.

Corporate leadership generally do not realize the operational ramifications of these plans. Somehow they feel compelled to offer them, even on implausible products sometimes.

Agree Walmart warranties are USELESS

AUTHOR: sloo - (United States of America)

Similar situation with a bicycle proving the warranty useless. Just needed pedals put on, as they were breaking off, andWalmart wanted us to ship the entire bicycle in for credit and then go back to store and buy a different bike. Wound up buying pedals ourself and putting on. Guess they know thats what most people will do and they make a few extra buck for nothing!

Walmart is like crack.

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

"refused to deal with Walmart again to buy electronics."

But you'd have no problem continuing to spend your money on all of the other crap that they sell, right?

It never ceases to amaze me that people come on here, claim to have been ripped off, then go back and give 'em more money.
