I honestly don't know if anybody will ever read this, and I have to remain anonymous, or my family that is a part of this will have their work environment made more insufferable. Appealing to Wal Mart's self hired ethics group didnt yield anything. Please read, and please voice your feelings about what I am going to share.
I am a spouse of somebody who is a member of wal mart management. They have been with the company for 17 years and for the first 16 have been very content. The person is a co-manager, which is one level below running their own store. For years, my spouse would work 3 days on and 3 off, or when working overnights, 4 on and 4 off. A year or so ago, this was changed to 4 on and 2 off while they worked day shift, which still opened up weekends from time to time. We were always able to plan a few weekends when they rotated in, and still see each other, in spite of their 12 hour days that were always supposed to be 8-10.
Recently, Wal Mart decided to change their shift policy for managent. Management is no longer permitted to have consecutive days off and only one weekend per month. They are also given one non-consecutive weekend day during the month and that is that. As a result, this is putting a strain on my family because the ability to communicate with each other and our family is becoming more and more difficult.
Wal Mart is a company that has for years, frowned upon labor unions. They train their managers and issue a hand guide which shows them how to break up the potential forming of these groups of non-management associates to fight for a better wage, benefit bundle, and other items that they are slowly squeezing from their associates. Now, management is being squeezed to the brink of not even being able to have a few days per week to rest, recover, and enjoy their lives.
I know for a fact, that the individuals that approved this policy work Monday-Friday, all make over 6 figures, and have all holidays off from their air-conditioned ivory tower. When I see the look on my spouses face, they no longer smile, but come home tired, spend an hour with their family, and go to bed, flip flopping from 11-9 to 7/5 to 8-6 to 6-4 to 11-9, where they NEVER leave on time. They deal with everything under the sun, reporting to store managers who grind them into nothing in an effort to receive their annual bonus, 100% of their salary, or a check for $125,000 every March. (Our subject received up to 50% , and the level below, or assistant, received 15% at cap). Albeit, my spouse did receive a 30,000 bonus, this was done without the new schedule change, and on the 4 day on, 2 day off schedule.
For a company that talks about how their goal is to make the American Family more comfortable, is it truly worth sacrificing the health and well being of their managment and staff. Having to go in on days off to cover scheduling, coach employees, or even have to do this during a paid vacation is ludicrous. I know about 7 or 8 other management level employees for this company as well that are effected by this. 3 of them have developed high blood pressure, ulcers, and one even had a panic attack. Is this how Wal Mart maintains their stock shares to be attractive to the public? Is this how they try to maintain their quality and fend off immenent loses to Amazon?
90% of us have had at least one sub par experience at Wal-Mart: Wether is has been a difficult return process, or messy shelves, or a miserable cashier, we've all had something happen that we disliked about this place. We go there because most items are cheap and convenient to grab while out and about. Small business have suffered to the point of endangerment, and now the company that should bow down and thank every staff member for the sacrifices that they have already made are turning on their own associates! This is an unfair and unethical practice, regarding the fact that they sent all management level associates a packet which they were basically forced to sign.
So please. the next time you shop there, and get ready to lose it because you feel the person in front of you is incompetent, please remember that corporate management must me more incompetent to force their tactical day to day leadership to work up to 60 hours per week without overtime. If you feel this is unfair, or feel this is wrong, please take five minutes to go to their web site, send a complaint, or help them in any way they can. This will eventually lead to many of their management staff's families disintegrating before our very eyes. American family values have eroded to a low point already, and for a company who's employee satisfaction rates continue to plummet, what will it take for you to realize that turning your staff into single drones with no other social base will not make things better.

Okay I now have to say WTH

Seriously, where in the world did your update come from?
The NAACP contacted you? There was NOTHING in this post that indicated anything about race. There was NOTHING in this post that indicated that one race was being mistreated over another. In fact you left every indication this was a company wide policy. Who were of these "some other" groups? Not only that but this site has a pretty good policy of keeping the posts anonymous. So while I won't say it didn't happen. It is extremely unlikely that the NAACP has even reached out to you through this site or due to this post.
Then we get to your previous profession. A Union "attourney". So let me ask you this since you apparently must know the law especially when it comes to labor. What is Walmart doing that is illegal?
Since you are on your self-entitled "high horse" where are you for people in other jobs that are taken away from their families in order to make a living? What about the families that aren't lucky enough to have only 1 spouse working? What about the families that have the mom working a day shift so that the father can work the graveyard shift to keep a roof over their heads? What about the Salesman who is away from his family 330 out of 365 days a year? Oh you say that they CHOOSE that profession...well guess what. Your Husband CHOOSE his profession too.
Look I actually really don't care if you have every civil rights organization on your side or are looking into how "unfair" Walmart is. I actually don't even shop at Walmart unless it is an absolute last resort, think it has been about 9 months since I even stepped foot in one. The reason I replied each time is that you seem to be under some misguided impression that a company must work around your schedule and when it becomes inconvenient for you that THEY must change. When in fact if you don't like the schedule..quit.

I appreciate the follow up. I know that for the last 16 years, my spoise was very content took pride in his work, and enjoyed what he did. It's a little tough to walk away from something after you've vested that kind of business. For some it's a matter of personal loyalty and obligation. For others, a feeling of being institutionalized in a corporate sense and bound by
golden handcuffs"
As far as unions go, By trade, I am a former union attourney. Unions can be a blessing or a curse, depending on the situation, as I learned through countless mitigations over individual and organizational legality. My parents were life long union members (teachers and electrical), and when they retired, they both had excellent pension plans. I left this way of life because of an opportunity to earn a similar income while spending 90% of my employment working from home.
I'm pleased to at least say that I was contacted by the NAACP and a few others regarding this post, and I appreciate the fact they they plan to further investigate the matter. Your support and attention were very generous, and hopefully this policy will be corrected.
Having your children, and your family time be "ripped-off" by somebody that you dedicated your professional career to can be extremely demoralizing. This is the first year that everybody isnt attending little league games, some school functions, and other events that were always attended.
I do have to admit, I did not expect a rebuttal regarding an open plea of awareness to how the Corporation that claims to be devoted to the American Family, has compromised the health, well being, and personal interaction time. I'm in no way making any accusations and will accept the rebuttal as genuine, although it just reminds me of a friend who owns a training company and pays his assistance to search out complaints and refute them.
Also, I've put a resume out aand communicated with a ton of my contacts at various companies that would be a fit. Finding another job eradicates our situation, but for others that are left in the wake of this issue, how does it help them? Profits haven't gone up during this chsnge? Have the four children of Mr. Walton been able to expand their horse fams?
I'm going to continue to further look into this matter. If anybody is in a similar situation, I hope that your voices are heard as well. Hopefully their schedules will be retored to satisfactory conditions and that Wal Mart will no longer notoriously understaff.
I apologize for any mispellings as my diabetis is winning it's war against my vision. :)

You do realize...

You are aware that your husband works in a Retail store that is open 7 days a week, and it sounds like 24 hours a day. Not only that but he is basically 2nd in command just below a Store Manager. You don't get to or stay at this level by working 40 hours a week.
In reading more of your "RipOff" I noticed your main complaint seems to be weekends and that he now only gets 1 full weekend and 1 day of another weekend a month. But just for fun I used your old 3-On/3-Off schedule for May and June and guess what I came up with? Starting on 5/1 with a 3/3 schedule in May your husband would be working 6 of the 9 weekend days. The other 3 consist of guess what...1 Weekend Day and 1 Full Weekend. Going to June out of 8 Weekend days he is working 5 of them. Oh and his off days..1 Weekend Day and 1 Full Weekend. Now, of course this is figuring we start on a Sunday. If you start that schedule on a different day it would give you different weekends but over a year it would yield about the same results.
So tell us your complaint again?
If you don't like his job then why don't you help him find another job at a different retail store, with 17 years he may even be able to walk right into a Store Manger Position at a different company and I am sure being able to write what ever schedule he wants.
Also, what does unions have to do with this? Your husband is management where any "union" contract or agreement would not apply to him. In fact if the "Union" decided to push the issue in a store and cause a walkout of the employees..it would be your husband who would be required to work even MORE hours.
