I am a young single female firsttime homebuyer who purchased my modest dream home a few months ago after a home inspection. I worked very hard and saved for many years to afford a down payment and mortgage payments. I felt very confident because the house came with an American Home Shield warranty that sounded like it would cover my major appliances and systems. When I put the heat on but the furnace wasn't working properly I called AHS.

The following day they finally sent a serviceman (Gus) to my very cold house who said the heat exchanger needed cleaning but he didn't have the proper tools to do the job and recommended another company that I would have to pay out of pocket. Gus admitted he didn't know much about heat exchangers. His business card said he is fully licensed(not true) and does residential and commercial installation of heating. cooling and refrigeration systems. He collected and very quickly cashed the $55 service fee.

I may be young but I'm not stupid so I called a reputable local heating and cooling business and dished out another $98 only to be told the exchanger could be cleaned with a long brush and a vacuum but it was rusty and in bad shape and could crack and release carbon monoxide. Several calls to AHS resulted in them telling me I had only 48 hrs. to get a second opinion (which isn't stated in the contract), the system wasn't maintained properly (there are service stickers on the unit from the previous owner), failure was due to normal wear and tear and I should have had the furnace checked by a licensed heating man prior to purchasing the house. Bottom line: DON'T BUY AN AHS WARRANTY

I'm sorry but the first guy is a repairman he doesn't do maintenance and it is not covered by your warranty company anyway. Had you had your system maintained you would not have to pay him for a service call to your home to tell you to clean it. You paid out of pocket because you are supposed to. There was no mechanical failure. Nothing was broken. You can't just run things into the ground because someone else will have to pay for it. You would take better care of your belongings if you knew you were going to have to fix the things you break yourself. Its like getting your oil changed. If you don't do it your engine will break. You can't blame the mechanic because he wants paid to tell you what's wrong with your car. He is trying to make a living. Unless you are a volunteer and do not expect a paycheck from your employer you have to understand his side. You have learned a valuable lesson I hope.
