We have been with bb&t for only a couple of years however, we have been taken for more than a what I call quite enough. I get a ssi check every month for my sons disabilitys and yet I get taken for some of it from this bank. Two weeks before Christmas I was told I was 320.00 in the hole. So needless to say I quit using checks and the debit card until I solved my problem. I started thinking Hey, I used only the card and I was told when I open the account that this was a new measure the bank took to help the people keep account to the good that I would not be able to withdraw money or use the card in the stores if no money was in my account. I would be denied! Well $400.00 later in NSF funds later well quess what! I was deceived! If this has happen to someone else please email me and let me know! I need help! sorry to bank at bb&t Teresa Curnutte
Ps. It was so convient that the lady that open my account is no longer employeed with them!

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Take Charge of your checking account

AUTHOR: Rhonda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 12, 2004

I am a customer service representative for a large banking institution. I have learned that what a bank teller says is not always so. I have also learned how the check/debit card works. If you make a purchase and that item totals 50.00, depending on the merchant they place what's called an authorization hold on the account, meaning that the funds have been removed from your balance TEMPORARILY. Most gas stations authorize a check/debit card for only $1.00. Most resturaunts will include a tip in the authorization. All of this is done legally. My suggestion would be to keep track of your spending in your checkbook register. Don't go by the balance you get at the ATM, online or over the phone. If you keep track of all transactions (as they occur) then your account should not be negative at all. Another piece of information, if the receipt from the merchant is not received by the bank within 24 hrs, the authorization hold is released making those funds available again.
expampl:
You have a balance of 100.00 in your account
You get 30.00 worth of gas
You go out to eat for 50.00
This is a total of 80.00 spend, leaving you 20.00 in your account. However when you call your banks automated system or get balance from the ATM it might show your available balance is 44.00 because the items you purchased are on an authorization hold remember gas holds are 1.00.
The next day the holds are released and you go to the grocery store and spend 80.00. The card will be allowed to make the purchase because it is showing a balance of 100.00 again. A bank cannot and will not take funds from an account until it has proof that a transaction is made. If you use your card as a credit (where you sign your name) that could take 2-5 business days for it to clear your account all the while those funds are available for you spend even though you have already spent them If you use is as debit, the hold is usually until it posts to your account.

Most banks don't do any processing over the weekend so purchases made after cutoff time on Fridays and purchases made all weekend are not going to be completely debited from account until at least monday.

Teresa! Don't Stop! SUE THEM!!!!!!!

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 17, 2003

Teresa, file a complaint with the FDIC against BB&T. You can do it online. Then file a complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission. Then file with the FBI. Contact your State banking authority and file a complaint! Then contact the local TV consumer reporter and tell them your story. Most important, talk to friends, enighbors and family. You'll be surprised when you find out BB&T has cheated and stolen from many, many people! Talk to an attorney and sue them!! But don't give up the fight!
