I have had an account with BB&T for 9 mths, never had a problem until the last month. I've been charged over $1200.00 in fees in the last month. I received a check in the mail from Moneygram to do some secret shopping, I took the check to my branch on Merchants Dr.. They cashed the check which was for $3200.00 without putting a hold on it, even though my account was negative $274.00 @ the time because of their fees.

I only have a savings account, not checking, they let someone take a payment out of my account three weeks early without my permission and started charging me fees. I deposited $300.00 out of the check I cashed, which they released.

I sent the Moneygram and completed the customer service survey on March 11,08 the same day I cashed the check. I went to get money to buy groceries on March 17,08 and had a negative balance of $2866.69. My paycheck was deposited on March 14,08 they had placed a hold on my account and taken the $375.00 I had in my account. I didn't receive anything about the hold on my account until March 24,08, that said the hold would be removed on the 25th.

I checked my account today and it was $2996.68 negative, they have taken over $1200.00 of my pay since Feb. 20,08. They cleared the check and now I have no money!!! I have 2 children and only get paid twice a month!!!

Personal Responsibility

AUTHOR: Resty - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 08, 2008

When are people going to start accepting some personal responsibility in their own lives?

I dont get it..........

WHY would ANYONE think that someone....a stranger no less.....is sending them......FREE.. money? Ive seen these amounts range frooooom $500.00 to 50,000.00 and still people CASH THESE THINGS !!!!!
There is little or no reason to expect that someone is just sending you money outta the goodness of their heart.

You dont know who sent the money. It almost always involves WIRING money to someone else you dont know in a different country....

WHY? WHY would you fall for this and then slam the banks for deducting it from your account when it bounces or is confirmed stolen/counterfeit/forged/altered ..

THINK first people.

NO one........EVER EVER EVER is just gonna send you FREE MONEY

Stop blaming the banks and everyone else for your greed. These scammers are getting RICH off it......and it couldnt happen AT ALL if people werent being greedy and or stupid.

This is all your fault (secret shopping)!!! for $3200 come on this has scam written all over it

AUTHOR: Wisebankmonk - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 07, 2008

First of all secret shopping in the amount of $3200, you just got greedy and wanted the money. And you blame the bank for not putting a hold on a cash-check??? there is no way to put a HOLD when you go and cash a check. What you should of done is deposit the check and wait for the hold to be over with before you go and take out the funds. Also what do you mean you owe the bank $1200...that money is from the check you just cash!!! you only had $900 and they gave you 3200 in cash. That money is in your hand!!! they want THEIR money back and you have it....secret shopping what a joke.

The bank is in no way at fault here!!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 28, 2008

How exactly is the bank at fault here?

YOU are the one who CASHED a suspect check. YOU should have just deposited it and waited for it to clear without touching any of the funds.

This is just plain old fashioned common sense. Obviously you just don't have any of that. There is no such thing as free money, and if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I see these scams all of the time

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 27, 2008

As a photographer, I see a variation of this scam nearly every day.

Be very wary of transactions through MoneyGram or Western Union with people you don't know. Also be wary of large checks that are sent to you with instructions to send a portion to another person through the previously mentioned money transfer services.

Amanda, I am sorry that this happened to you. I hope these scammers somehow receive appropriate punishment for their actions. Unfortunately, the bank did not rip you off. Their books have to balance and so they took back the money you received from the fraudulent check. While I know this is no comfort, you were fortunate that the bank did not press charges of bank fraud against you for depositing the check.

I hope you get through this.

This isn't entirely the bank's fault

AUTHOR: Sarah - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Unfortunately, you have fallen victim to what is commonly referred to as a Nigerian Check Scam. These scams work by sending people bogus checks and telling them to deposit them and then wire some of that money via either Moneygram or Western Union to someone that's usually in another country. The bogus check then bounces, but the victims have usually sent out the money they were told to send. That leaves the victim with a debt to the bank in the amount of the bogus check. That money is gone and you will likely never see it again.

That being said, the bank is at fault for not telling you that the check bounced. Unfortunately, you'll still be held liable for the charges, including all overdraft fees and negative balance fees (if your bank charges them).

Are you sure that the check/money order cleared?

AUTHOR: J G Shrugged - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 26, 2008

The letter said the hold would be off on the 25th, but did it actually come off? Or is there a reversal posted of the check bouncing?

What you are describing here sounds awfully like a scam...someone mailed you a check and then you have to send them part of the money back right away? A very common scam, and usually the check will be removed from hold and THEN bounce.

You are a victim of a scam.

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 26, 2008

The check you were given to deposit was a fraudulent check. The bank is required by regulation to make the funds available within a certain time period (depending upon the type of check). That is what these scammers count on. Several weeks later, after the check makes its way through the system, it will be returned as fraudulent and the bank will want their money back. You are left holding the bag.

The bank nor the bank employees are at fault.

The only thing you can do now is report it to the authorities and somehow come up the money you owe the bank.

You didn't find it odd that you would get an unexpected check for $3200?
