I just want to warn potential consumers about the Rent-A-Center location in Columbia, Missouri. Their items may seem reasonable (twenty dollars a week, or whatever), but you will end up paying two-three times what the item is worth, plus you will have to deal with the obnoxious (and unbathed) sales staff who works there.

I purchased a bedroom set from these idiots a couple of years ago, and made my payments everytime, to the tune of hundreds of dollars more than what it was worth. Even if you pay on time, you will be continously harrassed by phone calls (also, they will harrass the "references" you put on the rental application as well) and letters. If you are a day or two late, they will send their goons to your home (from their smell, they don't bother showering) to harrass you there. No matter how much you have paid, you can lose the items you "rent" at any time.

I eventually decided enough was enough after I heard a fat, greasy white guy behind the counter complaining to his zit-faced buddy about having to come to my home once to get a payment. I called them and had them pick up their cheap furniture, and chalked the whole experience up to a valuable lesson learned.

If you think you can't get credit at a normal furniture store, you would be suprised. My credit is terrible and I still got cheaper, better furniture from Furniture Factory Outlet and Ashley Furniture, without the rude remarks and body odor of the fatties who work at Rent-A-Center, Columbia. I wish someone would have told me this before hand. If you choose to go with them, give them references that won't mind being called continously (my dad eventually changed his number because of these perpetual virgins). And beware-it may seem like only a little money, but it adds up.

The lawsuit was for $109 million not the $150 million you claim.

As for the OP: I have rented from RAC before. After asking them not to provide the reminder call I was not bothered by any more calls. The only time they would call the references if if you were late or if you did not contact the store like they asked. Is the stuff overpriced? Yes, but you would know that when you signed the contract. Yes you can lose it at any time, because it's not yours until ALL payments are made. Just like financing a car, if you make all payments except the last one it's not yours and you'll lose it. RAC is a business with contracts. As with dealing with any business read the contract and understand it before you sign. If you don't live upto the contract agreements, expect the company to live upto theirs.

I applaud your comments here !!!!! I wish someone would tell everyone what a rippoff deaing with RentaCenter can be. The truth is , your bedroom may have already been used and pre-rented...it may have been new, but unlikely since approx 80% of rentacenters goods are used.

A typical bedroom outfit costs them a very low amount (average 275.00) which they rent for 21.99-39.99 oer week for 104 weeks. Lets take a simple 30.00 amount and even brand new they generate atotal revenue of over $3,120.00 for an item that costs them under 300.00.....WOW> Now only 11-12% of rentacenter customer keep their stuff...and this bedroom outfit re-rented over and over again at close to new price and terms for a figure that would astound you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I worked for this company for years and only saw it ripping off more and more consumers- and their employees......it it just keeps getting worse!!!

In 2007, a New Jersey lawsuit awarded over $150 million dollars in over charges to RentaCenter customers in a class action lawsuit that stated RentaCenter were like loansharks with the methods and charges they imposed.
You should also know that Rentacenter genereted over $3 billion in revenue in 2007. WAKE UP AMERICA !!!!! ITS A RIPOFF.
