Becuase of very large, uninsured medical expenses, my credit is not only in the toilet---it's in the cesspool! I badly need a computer, so I went to my local RAC---BIG, BIG MISTAKE!!!

I rented an HP desktop system, and ordered internet service. Before I could get the internet, though, my computer was stolen from my apartment (along with the still-unassembled computer desk and a large amount of cash---my RENT money---from my closet.

Of course, I reported the burglary to the police, and also to RAC. The young man to whom I spoke said that he'd ask his district manager what should (could) be done. A few minutes later, he phoned to inform me that I'd still have to pay for the computer. So, I continued making my $47.61 biweekly payments.

Several friends---including an attorney from my church---have asked why I'm paying for this computer, since I haven't had it since February. When I dug out my copy of the rental agreement, it does indeed say that the renter is reponsible in the case of theft, unless a police report has been filed (and, I presume, there's been an investigation). But RAC says No, I have to pay.

Folks, I'm dealing with prostate cancer, and just haven't had the energy to argue with these people---until now. When I went in to make my payment yesterday, I asked the young man how many more payments I had; he checked the computer, and told me that I still owe $441.00 (!) if I pay it in full now, but if I continue biweekly payments, I've got 42 MORE payments of $43 each----even though they know that I haven't had this computer since February!!!

I'm getting another copy of the police report, and I'll FIGHT.

In the meantime, do NOT use this company!!!

As your rental agrrement states,

When you signed the paper work you had to sign a form for the limited liability waiver, it is something that covers you against fire, storm, theft, and things like that. Vere important part of it says you have to provide a police report showing forced entry to be covered. Had you shown this all the rental merch would have been charged off that day.

Just like if your car is stolen and you don't keep up the insurance you are responsible for the payments. Why should RAC pay for you not reading your agreement and simply providing a police report?????

RENT-A-CENTER #2757 INSISTS THAT I PAY FOR STOLEN COMPUTER

AUTHOR: Mr anon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 25, 2008

Because of very large, uninsured medical bills, my credit is not just in the toilet---it's in the cesspool!!! I very badly needed a computer, so last February I bounced into my local Rent-a-Center---BIG, BIG MISTAKE!!!

The employees were all very attractive, courteous, personable young people, and I settled on an HP desktop system. I also subscribed to a home phone and highspeed internet service, but before I could get the internet, the computer was stolen, along with the still-unassembled computer desk, a large amount of cash (my RENT money), and other items that I discovered later. Of course, I immediately reported the burglary to the police.

The next morning, I phoned RAC, and the young man to whom I spoke said he'd ask his manager what should be done. A few minutes later, he phoned to inform me that his "district manager" said I'd still have to pay for the computer. That kinda seemed reasonable, since any crook could rent something, then say it was stolen in order to get out of paying for it. So, I continued making my $47.61 biweekly payments.

Several friends---including two attorneys from my church---have asked why I'm paying for the computer, since I haven't had it since February, and could definitely use the money elsewhere. When I checked my copy of the rental agreement, I found that it does, in fact, say that the renter is responsible in the case of theft---unless a police report has been filed (and, I presume, there's been an invesigation). But RAC says No, I have to pay.

Folks, I'm dealing with prostate cancer, and just have not had the energy to fight with these people---until now. When I made my payment this week, I asked the young man how many more payments I had; he checked the computer and informed me that I still owe $441 (!) if I pay it in full now, but if I continue paying biweekly, I have 42 MORE PAYMENTS OF $47 EACH---even though they know that I haven't had this computer since February!

I will not pay that. I've ordered another copy of the police report that I filed (and gave RAC in February), and I'll FIGHT.

In the meantime, all I can say is: I had planned to use RAC for all of my furniture and appliance purchases until I get my credit repaired (probably, another 2 or 3 years), but I wouldn't buy a paperclip from them now---and I will most emphatically discourage ANYONE from using these people!
